how long did your moving day last?
We are moving from a 2nd floor apt to a 2nd floor co-op building... and the movers keep estimating approx. 6 hours. Two movers told me it would probably be an 8-10 hour full day move because it's going down a flight of stairs and then waiting for the elevator....
Does it sound reasonable that with 3 men it could take all day? I ask because the ones who are estimating 6-7 hours are about $700-750.... the guy who just told me it would take a full day says it'll be $1050 and definitely take all day....
thoughts?

Re: how long did your moving day last?
Our moving day started at 8 and believe went to early afternoon there were 4 guys and it was raining. We moved from a 2nd floor apartment in Bellmore to a 3 bedroom split in Sayville. I think we had to pay for them to get back to Levittown too. I know it cost us $900.

Re: how long did your moving day last?
did you guys have hourly or flat rate?
I'm thinking that for $110/hr, it makes sense to go with the hourly. Could they possibly drag it out more than 9 hours?? We're moving 30 minutes away.

Sorry I am not sure my husband handled it and if I knew where the bill was I would look for it.

Re: how long did your moving day last?
Do you think that if DH and I move all (or most of) our boxes that to move the furniture listed below would be under 6 hours?
Full 5 piece bedroom set and mattress, 2 desks, 2 chairs, bookcase, file cabinet, dinette table with 6 chairs, 2 piece sectional [1 piece going to be hoisted out the window], microwave cart, chair and TV
Trying to decide if hourly or flat rate is the way to go.

Re: how long did your moving day last?
We moved from a 1bdrm apt on the 6th floor to a 2bdrm co-op on the 3rd floor 20 blocks away (about 20-30 mins... there was loads of traffic). Both are elevator buildings. We have lots of furniture, 21 boxes and lots of loose stuff. The movers estimated that it would take 6 hours, but it took the movers 5 hours at $100 per hour and $50 for travel time.
ETA - It sounds like 6 hours for your move is reasonable. HTH!

Re: how long did your moving day last?
I moved a BIG one bedroom apt on 2nd floor to a house.
3 men Started at 8-8:30 and finished just before 5pm.
It takes longer that you might think. Especially if they wrap your furniture the way they are supposed to.
I had LOTS of boxes too.

Re: how long did your moving day last?
from our two-story, one bedroom walk up in Long Beach to our three bedroom house in East Rockaway, it took about 3-3.5 hours. There were 4 men, but I think one of them was just the driver and didn't actually move anything. That being said, I think $700ish for 6-7hours seems good. I payed $475. Personally, I think it's worth it to get a flat fee. I didn't have to watch the clock and that made me feel better.

Re: how long did your moving day last?
Hmm it depends on the the stairs, walk to the truck etc.
When we moved from MI back to NY when DH finished law school it took a while to pack the truck - I think a good 3 hours - (we were in a 2 bedroom moved to a 1 bedroom) we weren't paying per hour - but we were in a third floor walkup and the stairs were rather twisty which took them longer to get stuff up and down.
Is there a way you can move your own boxes and breakables and just have them move your furniture that could save you time and money.

We hope to move our boxes and just have them move our furniture (which I inventoried in an above post). I'm wondering if it would take 6 hours for them to move just the furniture. If it's going to take 9 hours to move just the furniture, then I'd rather just pay the flat rate. But if I can save a few hundred (3 hrs x $110/hr) by moving our own boxes and just having them do the furniture, I'd rather that obviously. Oy. So confusing.

hmm the sectional thru the window is going to take a while and it does take a while to wrap up the furniture. I think it depends on how many men are moving the furniture - it takes longer to pack the truck than to unpack the truck. I think it could easily take 6 hours or so if you have to get all that furniture downstairs, into the truck, and back upstairs again. I could be totally wrong so don't hold it against me but I think I would be surprised if it takes 9 or 10 hours for that.
Hmm you said 3 men - well that would probably mean two moving one stays with the truck to secure the furniture.
