How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

Right now are you in the house that you plan to stay in for a long long time? Or is it a starter home and you plan to sell soonish? How long? If you are planning to stay - is it your dream home or do you plan to make do with what you have?

Also, if you are planning to sell relatively soon, are you planning on picking up a new 30 year mortgage?

5 years or if we stay we will blow out the back end of the house to make an extended family room and add an extra bedroom up here to make it 4 upstairs (we have one on the first floor right now)

In this market we will probably stay a little longer, we will be adding a master suite soon to make more room...

But we will probably sell and upgrade down the road

Re: How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

We are renovating the house as if were staying here a long time but if we are going to stay over 5-7 years we will all a 2nd story w/ a master suite.

Hopefully we will be able to move closer to the water someday and if that happens in 5-10 were outta here. If it takes longer or never happens were happy where we are.

dh WANTS out of NY but doesnt want to leave till the house is worth over 1/2mill not to far off....
If we do leave the state I do not want to have to pull any of the kids out of school, I would rather do it when theya re goin to change schools like H.S.
But if we never leave I will be just as happy ( but I know that will not happen)

Re: How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

When we bought the co-op the intention was at least five years. We bought a 2 bedroom so that even with our first child we would have room for the three of us. Ultimately we never wanted to feel rushed/forced to go.

Right now we acknowledge that the time is right for us to move on and this marks our 5th year.

ETA: the next purchase will be for a long long time. So as we are looking we are keeping that in mind. This whole buying/selling thing is so stressful and definitely something I would like NOT to do again.

We bought our "dream home right now" but can see ourselves building our true dream home in 5-10 years (or less). I see my sister's house and I dream of a pool with palm trees and a hot tub...and thank God it's possible here...on a lot of land!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are planning to extend our house down the road, if that happens and we're totally happy with it, I can see us staying there forever.

But theres always a possiblity we may stay for like another 10 years and then move but we'd stay in the same neighborhood.

Re: How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

our house is big enough to have 3 or 4 kids and is in a pretty good school district, so we are planning to stay for quite some time!

which makes me happy, because moving stinks!

We plan on being in our home for maybe 2 years tops. We want to move by the time we have a child. We would like to move to western suffolk (now in Coram), but being we are a really young couple and not fully established in our careers, we couldn't afford the areas we wanted. But we do not plan on stayin this far east for the long haul.

Re: How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

Not really sure. We plan on dormering and finishing the second floor within 1-2 years (add 2-3 BR's and a large bath)...and the next project we're saving for is the kitchen remodel (we're currently remodeling our bathroom and having the wood floors refinished).

We bought the house for its potential - walls can be knocked down to create a nice flow and we can build up and down (we plan on eventually finishing half the basement - keeping one side utilities and the other will be the den). So realistically we could stay here for a very long time...but I'm eyeing two streets in Huntington Village that I'm dying to live on Chat Icon So maybe when the market turns around again for seller's, we'll move. Who knows.

Re: How long do you plan to stay in your current home?

I'd liked to move in about 5 yrs to a bigger home, DH says about 10 or never, he loves our house. So we'll move in about 5-haha! No, I'm sure it'll be more than 5 but less than 10.
