Our family visited for 5 hours on christmas Eve. Everyone had to work and some had small children to gert up early with the next day.

Every family is different -
Mine does everything like a party and doens't make a big deal about having a house-ful of people .......So, Christmas Eve starts at 7:00 (only b/c we all work, otherwise it would be earlier) and ends sometime after 12 AM .......
Christmas 'brunch' at my MIL's starts at 1:00, and they're shooing eveyrone out (DH and I NOT included) at about 3:00 - which I find totally rude - but on MIL's side of the family having company is not the norm.......in my family it's weird to sit home alone w/o company 
ETA - DH and I had a Holiday Party the Saturday night before Christmas w/ 45 people - People came at 8PM and left at 3AM - AND I'm 25 weeks PG - I didn't mind. - It was a good time !!
