How long does a middle ear infection last?

Since Tuesday DS has been battling a middle ear infection. Poor kid went from throwing up to just sceraming. He won't let us put him down and won't sleep by himself. I'm hoping that today should be a the light at the end of the tunnel and he should start to feel better. Is 4 days usually how long the most horrible part lasts? I just can't stand seeing him so miserable anymore and I need sleep!(he did go to the doc and have the ear infection confirmed and is on antibiotic)

I am not sure, DD has an ear infection now also, and is on antibioitc, I didn't even know, I brought her in for her awful phlemy cough!
I hope they get relief soon.
