How long does your dog 'hold it'?

We are trying to train Chloe to hold it longer. Her kindergarten teacher said that with proper training, she can get up to 9ish hours, which is what we need. We currently have a dog walker and I'd love to eventually get rid of that expense.

So today I was discussing it with the dog walker and she said that it isn't healthy for dogs to hold it that long. I don't know how honest she was being since training chloe to hold it that long obviously means we won't need her anymore and I'm going to call my vet to double check. But I was curious about you all? How long do your dogs hold it?

9 hours seems like a really long time to me. I'd say my dog holds it for about 5 hours.

From 8 AM until 3/4 PM. And they are never busting to go. They've held it up to 12 hours before, but I wouldn't do that to them on purpose.

My dogs hold it about 7-8 hrs, but have gone 12 hrs (such as overnight, periods of being inactive mostly). I try to make sure they go by 8 hrs.

My dog will hold it until we take him out but that is in no way healthy. I think eight hours is reasonable for an adult dog.

This... We try to make sure it's about 7 to 8 hours, but there have been circumstances when they both have had to hold it 10-12 hours. We try to keep that very minimum - but it happens.

I wouldn't say 7-8 hours is unhealthy... Keep in mind, the dog walker wants to keep their job!

Same but I dont know if age has anything to do with it. How old is your dog? When mine was a puppy (up to about a year or so) he couldnt hold it as long.

Misty is always good for 8 hours and like others have said - occasionally has had to hold it for 12. We have a wee wee pad near the back door in case she REALLY has to go, but it is almost never used. I end up tossing it because it's been kicked around for so long it looks like hell.

sorry- i quoted you, but I meant to ask the op. My point which I didnt quite make well was that when theyre younger, I think its harder for them to hold it for long periods of time.

My boy holds it for about 9 hours when we are at working. He is never freaking out about having to go either.

Chloe is 8 months. She can hold it overnight and currently goes about 6 hours daily before the dog walker comes.

ETA: Her kindergarten teacher told me that dogs can (with proper training) hold it for an hour longer than their age - so a 4 month old dog can potentially hold it 5 months.

our dog has been known to hold it for 10-12 hours with no problem. I think she must have a bladder of steel, though Chat Icon . Before I go to bed at night, I always let her out, and sometimes she just stands there and doesn't want to "go." Then in the morning, she still doesn't seem interested in going out until after I've been up for an hour or so. She likes to "sleep in", Chat Icon . I often ask DH if he thinks I should wake her to put her outside, but he figures if she's sleeping, she must not have to go.

Re: How long does your dog 'hold it'?

My labs hold it for 10-12 most days while we work. They aren't begging to go out right away when we get home either. I don't think they are doing much like drinking while we're gone either. Our vet says they sleep the whole time so don't feel too guilty about it. But, of course, we do. We have a doggie door for the nice weather now.

Re: How long does your dog 'hold it'?

They have held as long as 10-12 hours. Even the puppy.

But this is a rare occasion. And it was overnight.

The all can hold 7-8 hours on a regular basis. But only if they are in their crate and sleeping.
