It really depends. I've started in places in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Is there an actual offer on the table?

Also, depending on the field and certain requirements that are needed prior to starting the job, it can take longer.

For example, I know a lot of places in human services that require things like finger printing and physicals and it can take a month or so to get that stuff together--if not longer.

I know what you mean. Disregard the fingerprints and stuff like that...I am just wondering about knowing if you are a potential candidate to even get to that point.

I think knowing within a week or two is reasonable. Follow up is good as well---sending a thank you note in the mail, calling or emailing the person who interviewed you, etc.

I also know when I used to interview the process often could take a long time because of references not getting back to me. Also, I work in a field where my clients need to come first, so interviewing and following up on references on MY end would often need to take a back burner at times.

Good question. I came on here to ask that myself. I had my second interview yesterday and I am a bit antsy. I'm just dying to find out when they check my references....I have them on standby to alert me Chat Icon

it varies, a lot!

one job I got - I waited 3 weeks between my interviews & the offer letter. another job I got - I had an offer letter the day after my interview.

totally varies. for one company i interviewed with recently, it took over two months before they made a decision. For the job that I just got, I had my first interview on 3/28, my second on 4/8 and the offer came this past monday, 4/13. it can drive you nuts though, that's for sure!!!!

I've started in two weeks and I've started in six. I think it's dependent on their need, ability of the HR dept, and your availability.
