How long should $900 worth of oil last to heat house?
Really dumb question
We bought our home and bought an almost full tank of oil with the house @ 900 dollars worth. How long should this last? We want to covert but are thinking we should use up this oil first...I have heard you can "sell it back" but don't know where to start with that...thanks

Re: How long should oil last in a tank this winter?
Depends on size of house, if house is well insulated & temperature house set at.
That said, our house 2300sq ft, very open floor plan, insulated decently & temp set at 69 during day & 67 at night, we were filling every 5-6 weeks.

Have you filed to convert? My brother in law just did & it took over 12 weeks. $$ for the oil means nothing, its the amount of gallons

You need to contact the gas company cause they will need to bring the gas to the house.....they are SLOW in scheduling. The actual work by the plumber you hire is short but personally I would wait til the nicer weather. You will not have heat while this is being installed. I wouldn't want o be without heat in the cold months for more than a few hrs.

The gas line is already in the house--does that change things?

That would last me forever I think! I think our fillups are around $600 give or take (we're on budget so I rarely pay attention) and we get *maybe* 3 fill ups per winter. Once around end of Oct/beginning of Nov., once in January, once in March. We never really need it but that's our schedule. We usually have about 1/3 tank left when they fill it up again.
We have 1 zone, 1500 sq. ft, open floor plan. We keep it around 69-70 if we're home, 60 if we're out and also 60 at night when we go to sleep.

Yes it does change things. My parents and in laws just converted and we are all in queens. Con-ed/ national grid (depending who you use) will also give you a rebate if you get a more energy efficient boiler. The plumber submitted it for them...

Re: How long should $900 worth of oil last to heat house?
$900 is kind of relative to oil prices, but say that was a full tank. it would last us about 2 months in the winter. we have a 4 bedroom split. very well insulated. thermostat is on 68-69 during the day and 63 at night (the bedrooms stay very warm)
