How Long Until a Cat and Dog Get Used to Eachother?
I took Lep's sister home with us yesterday. The Captain really wants to sniff Banshee but she starts hissing and runs up the stairs and hides under my bed. She comes out to see me or DH or DD but she won't go near the dog.
Typically, how long does it take until they tolerate eachother?
TIA!

Re: How Long Until a Cat and Dog Get Used to Eachother?
Our cat and dog took a few days. We had the dog 1st. I must say though, our cat is an angel, she is the sweetest thing and has never hissed, clawed or done anything like that. I don't know if that will be the case with everyone.

Banshee is sweet and mushy, but also very skittish(sp?) around other animals. She and her brother didn't get along, that's why she and her sister stayed with my parents when I moved out and I took Lep. After he passed I decided to take Banshee since she wasn't getting along with her sister, Half Pint (Half Pint is a JERK) lol. I love HP, but there is too much of a risk of her scratching my 18 month old. Beside, my parents would be lonely without a cat in the house.
Anyway... I'm rambling, lol, it's late. Thank you for your answer, I hope she warms up to Captain soon. I want her to come and sit with me at night when I watch TV like her brother used to do.

I'm not much of a cat expert (this is my 1st) , but I think after she gets used to her new home, she should be ok.

Re: How Long Until a Cat and Dog Get Used to Eachother?
Our took about a week to get used to each other because our cat has been a only "child" for about 7 years before we got our puppy 2 years ago so she had to get used to sharing attention. Now they are the best of buddies with the occasional jealously but they seem to like to tease each other. Don't worry they will like each other in no time.

We had the cat first and it took them about a month to get used to one another.

Re: How Long Until a Cat and Dog Get Used to Eachother?
wow! my cats took a lot longer.
I had two cats and brought home a 3 year old dog. The dog was a total mush.
1 cat warmed up after about a month. The other cat took a good 6 months before he would go near the dog. there was a lot of hissing and barking.
But now, they all get along. They sleep together too.
Maybe because my cats were a little older it took longer. My main point is -Don't give up if it doesn't happen right away.

Re: How Long Until a Cat and Dog Get Used to Eachother?
Thanks everyone!
Banshee is 4 years old and Captain is almost 6 months old. So Banshee might take a while to warm up since Captain probably wants to chase her around the house and lick her,
