How Many Interviews Did You Went On Before Getting An Offer?

Just curious as to how many job interviews everyone went on before getting a job offer?

I must have gone on least 9 so far in the past 2 months and haven't heard anything! Feeling kind dejected.

It didn't used to be so hard! Got my last job after going on one interview and previous to that I went on 3 and had 2 offers. My batting average is so bad now.

Don't know if it's that web hiring managers are being more picky!

We usually do a minimum of 2 interviews, 3 people. The last person is the hiring manager.

When I interviewed for my position, I was offered the job by the VP during the interview. (not the usual case, we almost always notify them afterwards).

2 - one on the phone, and then one in person.

For tech interviews it makes sense to do a phone interview first, you can ask direct questions to find out if the person knows their rump from their elbow. Then the in person interview is just to make sure you're not a serial killer.

My current job had 4 interviews during the process. Chat Icon It's usually 2 where I work, but the head guy was out of town so I first met with someone else, then I met with the head when he got back.

ETA: I've been offered every job I ever interviewed for, even jobs I was ridiculously unqualified for, where if I had taken them lives would have been in danger.Chat Icon

honestly-- I have interviewed for almost a year and gone on countless interviews and have not gotten anything... but this was when there no jobs out there..

Other times, I have been offered every job I interviewed for...

It really depends-- but don't get frustrated. Just keep things in perspective, think about how everything happens for a reason, and that whatever you get next, will be a stepping stone to the next thing.

And I did pass your res along to my HR person!

Thanks Randi!

And thanks for the others for their replies. The 9 interviews were with 9 entirely different jobs, most of which I was not too psyched about so didn't do my best.

Some I just interviewed recently so haven't heard back yet.

Would like to know what you guys think are key to getting job offers. Especially for those who seem to be able to get every job they interview for.

Thanks!

I never ever get nervous during interviews. I don't know if there is a secret to it, or if it is just how I am, but I don't get nervous, so it makes it much easier to think. I have all of my standard answers figured out, but I always take a minute and repeat the question to give myself time to formulate an answer. I always have key points I want to talk about, and I incorporate those answers into the questions. More than anything I think the key is being the type of person the people would want to work with. Try to seem relaxed and funny.

Thanks nov04libride!

I heard that it's important to be yourself and try to establish rapport with the hiring manager.

But did you write thank you notes and make following up calls to all the ppl you interviewed with?

I try to write thank you notes to all the hiring manager I'm interested in working for. But don't make follow-up calls as I think that's too intrusive...

I never call. I used to write notes, but lately I've heard back so quickly that a hand written note would not have reached the interviewer before they made a decision anyway, so I didn't. Sometimes I write a thank you email if I remember something I hadn't mentioned. Having sat on many interview committees, I can say a thank you email is nice, but would never make the decision for me as an interviewer, and I am sure most people feel that way. At this point I should say I am qualified for all of the jobs I apply for, and I have a doctorate and a lot of experience in my field. The more surprising jobs were entry-level ones back when I first graduated college...I had never done programming and was offered a job as a flight programmer--when they asked me about experience all I said was I had flown before!

This is pretty much how I go about it also. A receptionist told me that she knew I was going to get the job when I was sitting in the lobby. I asked her how she knew. She said "Most of the candidates figet because they're nervous."

What kind of jobs are you interviewing for?

I've been interviewing for web producer and web project manager type roles.

I don't think I am nervous during interviews but I do tend to let the interviewer dictate the direction of the interview. Which from what I hear is not a good thing, it should be more of a two way conversation instead of an interrogation.

I also think that interviewing skills are alot more important now when it's mid to senior level jobs. That's what I'm mostly trying for now after 10+ years experience. Chat Icon
