How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

A friend of mine and I were talking about this and my number was a lot lower then hers. Her OB doesn't think much of the miscarriages but I do....but, then again, I have a much different perspective then she does.

What do you think?

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

this is something that ive been thinking about a lo...

im not waiting for more m/c's... i see nothing wrong with at least having bloodwork done to see if there is an issue...

it boggles my mind that you should have to suffer more just to be able to seek additional help...

When I had my D&C they tested the tissue and found that there was a genetic abnormality which was the reason for the miscarriage. It gave me some peace of mind and I didn't feel the need to see a RE. If (god forbid) it happens again then I would probably see a RE.

I get pregnant pretty easily with the help of opk's. However, I've had two losses in eight months (15 weeks - chromosonal abnormailty) and (8 weeks - blighted ovum). My obgyn thinks the losses are bad luck. In my gut I do as well, BUT I have decided to consult with a specialist regardless. I need piece of mind at this point. Chat Icon

I had a m/c in June '09, then started TTC again in August '09. We didn't get PG again until June '10, and it ended up being a chemical. After that, I went right to a RE, although my obgyn did not think it was necessary. I see no need to wait to get to the testing done.

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

My OBGYN send me to a specialist after my 2nd m/c, she didn't think there was anything wrong since both losses were very early on and for different reasons, but I asked so she agreed to send me. The specialist found nothing wrong and was VERY optimistic I would have a baby...needless to say I got pregnant a month later, was terrified for 40 weeks and have a beautiful baby boy that is 3 weeks old.

If you feel you need to see a specialist go when you feel the time is right, there is no right time or wrong time, if after 1 mc you want to be tested, go for it - fear of the unknown is so much worse than knowing for sure what is going on with your body.

She has had 2 in the last 5 months....the last one she had the tissue analyzed and it was a chromosomal abnormality but the first she didn't.

I think it is better to have more information then not enough. But that is just me!

Her first pregnancy was fantastic! First time off the pill and whammo....now she has been trying and has had 2 miscarriages.

I personally would see an RE after after 2 miscarriages.

I want to go to one now just so that i can get a sono every week once i become pregnant.

If i don't get pregnant in 6 months i will go to one, since i'm older.

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

I am all about being proactive instead of reactive so I am going to see an RE next week. I have been TTC for 6 months with 1 miscarriage. Also all together we stopped using protection 1 year ago but only got into the TTC 6 months ago.

Anyway I just want some basic tests done and to find out if they see anything that raises a red flag. It does not hurt to get checked out, esp if you insurance will cover you. 2 OB's I saw said no need for further testing or to see an RE but I am not listening to them. I know too many people who suffered 2-3 miscarriages and waited so long to see an RE. I dont want to waste years TTC.

For me personally, one mc was enough. I thought we would try for a few more months after the loss before seeking the help of an RE. We did, and at the 1 year point we started seeing him. I always had an idea something could be wrong, now I know there is..I wish we hadn't waited at all Chat Icon

One.

I was told when I m/c'd that a regular OB will let you have 3 m/c's before any testing is done. I think if they had to have the m/c's it would be one.

I had one ectopic and the ob told me it was just "bad luck". Yeah ok. Three months later I went to an IF specialist and found out I had MTHFR Factor V - which didn't cause my ectopic but could've been the reason I was not getting pg or that I was having what I thought were bad periods but were possibly early m/c's. I'll never know.

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

I had 1 mc... then when it was taking a while to get pregnant again, I sought out an RE.
I wasn't willing to waste any time and needed to see if there were any issues. I needed that peace of mind.

I'm not a fan of the way some OB's just shrug off mc's. I get that they happen... and a lot of times there's no real reason for it and nothing is wrong. But to shrug them all off the way i see and hear some of them do... i just think it's wrong. I wouldn't ever want my situation to be over generalized.
sometimes you just need to take charge of this yourself and go at it on your own because OB's tend to have a generalized line of thinking when it comes to mc's.

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

I had scheduled a consult with an RE after my 2nd miscarriage. I never amde it to the appointment though because I was bombarded with appts with my regular OB and high risk OB to see if anything was going on. Turns out I have MTHFR. Fast forward a few months; when I was told I was having my 3rd miscarriage, I called the RE again and scheduled another consult. By the grace of God, my pregnancy was viable and I am now 16wks along. I never made it to that appointment either.

I wouldn't wait- no matter what doctors tell you. As the patient, you know your body best.

would an re even see you if you only had one miscarriage and it never really took more than two months for you to conceive? I wouldn't need a referral from my obgyn.
Just curious, i probably won't go just yet anyway.

I had 1 mc and it took over 9 months to get pregnant again. the mc it was my first try (but we were also on our HM). I went because of the combo that I had the mc and it was taking a while to get pregnant again.

I didn't need a referral from my OB.

I think it would depend on why you had that first mc. And how long you have been trying after that.
If I had one mc and was only trying for 2 months after... I'd probably personally wait a few more months. then if something didn't happen i would go to the RE.

Hi, I saw on another post you said you are 39..I would probably go see an RE. See what your fertility coverage is. If it is good you may want to go to be proactive. As long as you are ok with testing, monitoring and other types of procedures they may suggest.

Or you can wait it out a few more cycles, maybe 2-3? Then go from there. That is great you conceived so fast though!

Re: How many miscarriages did you or would you have before you sought IF help?

I am going through my 1st miscarriage right now. I am going to be 34 in June. We are going to start TTC again in July, if it takes longer than 6 months or if we have another m/c, I am going right to a RE. I discussed it w/DH & he agreed right away.
