How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

the talk of babies has been coming up alot lately and we'd both consider it a blessing to have a baby at any time. but we'd ideally like to have the house THEN the baby. but the urge to have a baby has been becoming overwhelming. so i wanted to see if its "okay" by people's standards to have the baby first then the house.

opinions?

not everyone can afford a house on Long Island, that does not mean you will be any less of a parent as a result. If you and your husband feel that you are ready to have a baby, and are financially ready house or not...go for it!!! Good luck!Chat Icon

we're not letting finances get in the way of family

we're renting a mid-sized 1 bedroom apt right now and are expecting in late sept.

DH is 11 years younger than me and is still in grad school. so, currently, he's still receiving stipend, and working long hours. we were on the cusp of getting a home, but then backed out last summer. we're sort of glad that we did for numerous reasons. we instead moved into a larger apartment and began trying. Since I'm older, we felt we should begin having kids now, so we can have more than one if we want.
the crib and changing table will be in our bedroom.

My theory is, whenever you're lucky enough to have a stable loving home, are able to become pregnant, and have a healthy pregnancy, GO FOR IT! and count your blessings.

things always have a way of working out.

good luck!

We are still renting. Other then the lack of space, everything in our life is okay. When the time is right for a house, we will be ready...

Its sort of nice to not worry about added homeowner expenses.

Who knows when we will be buying...we will probably have #2 by the time it comes around.

With DH's job, we have to remain flexible and follow the money around so he can move up the ladder.

It was very important for DH to have finished his degree before baby, and important for me to be out of debt with savings to allow me to sah.

We just DD and we are still renting. We wanted to wait until we found a house first but for us we wanted a family way too much and so we decided to have the baby first and then deal with finding a house later because in all reality the house may take many more years regardless of baby or not.

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

We rent. We have a very large three bedroom apartment that we chose knowing full well we would have a baby (or two) before we were ready to buy a home. Our rent is VERY low considering the space we have and we can still save for a house while we are here even WITH a baby. We would be foolish to leave right now.

DH and I married a little older. Having a child did not come easy to us. Had we waited to have children until we owned a home, then I may not be starting to even TTC until I was at least 40 if not older. Yeah I know many people do it but it was not something I really wanted to do - personal choice

I think it is very hard to compare onesself to others and especially here on LIF. Some people are renters and some are not. It does not make you any less of a parent if you rent. Ive said this before and Ill say it again...my parents had 3 children in a one bedroom apartment in Queens. They then moved to a three bedroom house 2 years after the third child, my brother, was born. That house became a 5 bedroom house after I was born. My siblings did not feel short-changed because they lived in an apartment - they are pretty well adjusted.

We rent and will always rent - there is no way we can afford a home... and Cailen is the happiest baby ever - plus, his reflexes are awesome to avoid running into the furntiure! Chat Icon

we rent, but hopeefully not for too much longer. My DH & I are dead set against being in an apartment longer than needed. DH grew up in an apartment, so it's not an option once she can walk!

We are currently building a house so are renting while we are waiting it for it to be ready ( it is a very long process.) We knew when I got pregnant that we would most likely have the baby in the apartment for about 6 months.

To us not living in the house was not a huge deal, not saying it would have been nice to decorate a nursery instead of a small area in our bedroom but the wait for the new house will be worth it!

We actually just finished setting up all the baby stuff today and are both so impressed with how we have moved stuff and how we were able to make it work so nicely.

Re: How many of you were still renting when you got pregnant/had your first child?

We were renting when I became pg with DD, almost 4 years ago. We found a house when I was 4 months, and then moved in when I was 32 weeks- the exact same day as my baby shower.

It was very stressful and a ton of work to pack and move and unpack while I was soooo big.

My advice would be to move before you get too far into the pregnancy or after the baby is born.
