I got 5 plus a "Swaddle Me" blanket. Honestly, I have NO clue what to do with the receiving blankets.

I would say that 5 or 6 is good. You should also take some from the hospital and that will add to your collection.
I use the receiving blankets more than I thought I would. I used it to swaddle DS, now as a blanket to cover him when he sleeps.

Only if you are really talented. I couldn't make a swaddle that stayed tight except with the "Miracle Blanket".
The receiving blankets I used to put on the floor under her, or over her when we went for walks in the stroller.

Re: how many receiving blankets do we need?
I just did my layette with a consultant and she said to buy 4 and then there are always more that come as gifts (and having a total of 5 is fine). She seemed to know her stuff. I guess I am a hoarder because I was thinking we need around 20!

The swaddling isn't hard..there's a few ways to do it & babies love it. It mimics the feeling of security they had in the womb & usually quiets them down. My DD loves it, we call her burrito baby. We put her to sleep like this & wrap her when she fussy.

Re: how many receiving blankets do we need?
I should post a thread about my layette experience. I was not going to do a formal consult b/c the store that offers this service is pricey. My MIL had offered to pay for a whole layette and she was familiar with this store and felt that their expertise was worth it. I still felt bad about the $$. But then a few other factors went into my decision to just get it done this way (it was great to get it all done at one place, esp. b/c I haven't been feeling well). Now that the appointment is over, I see a lot of benefit. We paid more for the items we got, but there was some savings when the consultant explained why some things may not be totally necessary. One thing she convinced me of is that the long sleeping gowns make life a lot easier in the beginning. If it were up to me, I might have only bought 1-2 of those to try out, along with my 20 blankets!!!!

They will teach you in the hospital. But my DS HATES to be swaddled, we gave up very quickly.
As for the original question, I am out of the ordinary, but I say to hoarde the blankets. I have probably like 15 and use them. I keep ones in the diaper, the car, my mom's house. DS LOOOVVVEEES his blankets.
Plus sometimes I end up wiping his face when he is eating or drool so they have to go in the wash.

Uhhh, yeah. We hate those things. They just ride up on DS, footie pjs are and were a better choice for us.
You kinda don't know what your baby will like til you bring them home from the hospital.

That is EXACTLY what I would have thought. However, I did end up with mostly the ones that convert to PJs with legs. Depending on how you arrange the snaps, they can be gowns or they can be PJs (they just don't have feet).

Re: how many receiving blankets do we need?
My mother told me that you can never have enough! I used two just in the carriage with my nephew to adjust his head (even with the insert) and they are just great light blankets.
I think I have around 20 or so

All my kids have been spitters so I always seem to go through a ton of them..I think i have about 15..I use them to swaddle them in the beginning..and then as burpy rags later on...and then in the end they become great dust rags..

I ove the sleep gowns...who wants to deal with all those snaps at 1 am...and at 4 am....and at......
I think you have enough receiving blankets. The hospital ones are good, a little bigger than most and great for swaddling.

Re: how many receiving blankets do we need?
We have 4 receiving blankets and he uses them in his bed or when we hold him if he feels cold. We also have burp cloths about 6. I will say have been home since Sunday and aldready did laundry. I think I would like some more burp cloths. Right now we use both the burp cloths and the reciving blankets to swaddle him.
