How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
I'm trying to put together a budget for all the baby items I need to buy for our future nursery.
Will $5k cover all baby items?
crib, stroller, car seat, swing, etc.

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
Well...for DD I proly spent about $600 total. We shopped Craigslist and I bought bedding on sale.
For the #2, we have mostly focused on getting DD's new room together. So far I have spent about $200. Total, after a new stroller, more stuff for her room, and then some gear for the boy I'll proly spend about $600 again.
That said I would spend more if I had the extra cash.

I just had no idea how much money we would need to budget. I'm just now thinking about the financial impact of the baby and wanted to plan accordingly.
Yes, I will probably have a shower but I don't want to expect big items from my friends and family. I was going to buy all the big ticket items myself and they can buy us additional cute clothes and accessories if they want to.

Many people register for all of the big ticket items as well as smaller things so people can purchase them for the shower. Many people or STB grandparents enjoy buying the long lasting big ticket stuff, ie. crib, dresser, glider, stroller, PNP, etc. I know my BFFs keep nagging me about registering for the crib b/c they want to do a joint gift. I think $5000 is alot more than is necessary, even if you did buy all of your furniture and every big ticket item.

that is very nice of you but i think that is what the point of having a shower I know that when I go to a shower my mom and I usually pick something big and split the cost and I have noticed that alot of people do that
I think that I am lucky when I say that I was blessed with my mom she was able to buy the furniture, all the bedding and everything that went with it (al the accessories) then travel system and many other things but I did leave some big ticket items on my registry for other people just think of things you have bought for other people I know I just recently had 5 bridal/baby showers this summer and each gift was approx $75 or more depending on the person

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
People put a lot of the big ticket items on their registry.
My mom bought me the crib, dh and I bought the changing table/dresser combo but the car seats and strollers were all gifts. People can also buy the gifts together. Like a 150 dollar stroller can be split 3 ways, with people spending 50 dollars each.

I have never been to a baby shower before! We are the eldest in our families AND we were one of the firsts to get married. I will be the first amongst all my friends to have a baby.
I guess it is similar to a wedding registry - to want to buy the nicest items off the registry.

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
We registered for ALL the baby stuff we needed. (bottles, stroller, high chair, pack and play, etc. etc.) The only things that we did entirely on our own was the get the nursery ready. We painted, installed all new trim and moulding, had new carpet installed, and bought all the furniture. We have spent about $4500 on all that so thank god for showers and baby registries!!!

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
I did budget a couple thousand but am soon realizing that I won't need it.
My parents and DH's parents bought our furniture.
I registered for all the big ticket items and so far, I already know of people who are getting some of the big ones:
My dad - car seat
My brother - stroller
My SIL's - Toddler car seat, Pack & Play etc...
It's almost like the family is calling "dibs" on the big ticket items!! It's sweet that they all want to be so generous... At the end of the day, we will barely have to buy anything...and I am so grateful to have such generous families.
I think if you are having a shower, put off buying anything until it happens...people will definitely suprise you!

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
It all depends on how much you plan to spend on nursery furniture. You can do less expensive furniture that you plan to replace at some point or spend more on furniture that you want to have last for a while.
We spent over $3K alone on DD's furniture so $5K if you plan to do all big ticket items yourself can be reasonable.

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
well, here goes my estimates:
my amazon registry: $1500 includes mattress, linens, breast pump and supplies, high chair, portable high chair, baby bjorn carrier, bouncer, other minor supplies
BRU registry: roughly $1300? includes packnplay, layette, glass bottles, bath supplies/tub, carseat, healthcare/grooming, changing pad, diaper bag, extra carseat base, other minor supplies
furniture (bargains!!!): crib (babymod) $215 changing table/dresser $250
bought on our own: bumbleride indie stroller $450 MoMA mobile: $40 Lots of clothes (couldn't resist!) $250? chicco infant carseat $180 stuffed animals ($250)
finally, disposables... initial purchase of diapers, wipes, lotions, soaps, dish/clothing detergents, formula.... I estimate that to be roughly $300
If you're doing it, don't forget the cord blood collection costs @ CBR (nice med professional discount) something like $1400
Since everyone has different splurges and budget items, I can tell you ours: budget: furniture ($500 for set), target linens (all the linens and tons of extra sheets and blankets will be under $400), many clothes from super outlet sales!
splurges: stroller, organic mattress ($250), high chair ($200), baby bjorn bouncer ($90), (german) steiff stuffed animals (won't even confess to how much our lucky pig costs!), and some smaller splurges like a $22 teething ring.
I'm CERTAIN I'm forgetting a lot of stuff, but the current rough tally is about $4700.... or $6100 if you include cord blood collection.
so $5k is pretty accurate in our case! even though on the surface (no formal nursery and inexpensive furniture) it would appear to be much less!
but note that more than half of that is on my registry obviously not all of it will be purchased, but at least 2k worth likely will be..... so you can subtract that estimated amount from your budget calculations

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
So we are counting on the shower for most of our necessities, but we are budgeting about $1,000 for baby furniture (crib, dresser/changing table, bookshelf)
My parents got us the travel system we wanted and my IL's said they would buy the rocker from Pottery Barn that I am in love with

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
I think that's a good amount to put aside for the necessities. We spent a lot on DD's furniture but it's her furniture for the next 18 years so I think it was worth the money.
Do yourself a favor and register for EVERYTHING. You may be surprised by the generosity of your friends and family. Even if you don't get the big ticket items, if you register at BRU they send you a 10% off coupon for the items that didn't get purchased so it's worth it just for the discount.

Re: How much are you budgeting for your nursery?
Our last nursery cost around $3700. Several of the items were purchased for us including the crib, which was $950.
This time we are using our crib that we have, and DC#1 will get a toddler bed. The one we are looking at is around $250. We will need an armoire only for the new baby, and will re-use the changing table as well, since DC#1 no longer uses it. We will have to get a small bookshelf for DC# 1 room, since we were using the changing table to hold the books....

What's a budget?
My budget has long gone out the window and DH and I live in a 1 bedroom apt. We are going to use a small extra room for the baby, but it not a traditional nursery by any means. We will probably buy the crib, mattress, stroller, carseat and layette which depending on which way I go, (though I am leaning towards the higher end...) will cost somewhere in the vicinity of 2K. This is 2K without a dresser, changing table etc. Can I do it cheaper? Yeah, probably, but I like what I like and unfortunately for me, that means .
