how much do u pay your sitter for your BABY?

I believe the going rate is 12, but is that for babies as well?? I only have one DD, 4 months, the sitter i interviewed and liked charges 15. Should I negotiate? Is 15 normal? I said I was "thinking 12-14" and she was a little uncomfortable negotiating and didn't seem to mind a lower amount, but if she's very good i want her to want to sit and I don't want to pay less than i should....

Is this for an occasional babysitter or more of a nanny?

$10 hour but she only watches baby. Doesnt clean or anything like that. She is worth every penny. You can find a good one for $10.

I started off giving $10 and I always give her extra money without her asking because we love her.

Yeah babysitters are more per hour. I was a nanny and a babysitter and I started at $10, 15 years ago. I loved certain families so didnt mind as much, but all my friends were getting paid $12-20/ hour including my sister. The average was probably $15 (excluding high school kids with less experience). But again, that was more for babysitters a couple nights a week, on a regular basis. Nannies that stayed during the day everyday, it was more of a flat weekly number. HTH!

How much experience does she have? How old is she? Any qualifications inclluding CPR/ First Aid and Safety/ Lifeguarding?

All of these help determine what she can expect. Its a hard balance and different for each sitter.

Ok. Wow thats hard. Im 29, a previous live-in nanny and tons of experience. I am also certified in all the above mentioned. I asked for $15 as well with my most recent family I sat for. Fridays or Saturdays, as needed. They negotiated with me at $13/ hour, and then rounded up to the next hour if they came come mid-way through the hour.

Its hard to spend so much on care. Its also hard bc you get what you pay for. I am married, and work a full-time job, so $10 or $11 an hour isnt worth it to me to give up a weekend night with my husband (but I would do it to help a family out), but it may be a great deal for someone in their early 20's or teens.

I also found my pricing on babysitting/ nanny websites to see what I should ask for, and came up with $15. For a day nanny it was closer to $10 bc of all the hours.

Now that Im going to be a mom its so hard to think about paying all that money to a sitter. If shes good and worth it try not to lose her. I am still close with the families, and see them for their birthdays and things they want me to be a part of. My sister's family she sits for gets her spa gift cards or other incentives on the side instead, but she also makes more than $15 (same experience). I would see if shes ok with the $13/ hour and round up, the rounding up made a big deal for me, but that way you dont have to commit to more. Good luck, and dont lose her if shes that great!

It is my understanding that $15 is average. I think it depends on age - I'd rather pay $15 for an experienced 30 year old than $12 for a HS student....
I can't believe I babysat when I was 15 - I wouldn't hire me now!

I agree - although I started babysitting at 12 for family! People left me alone at 15 with their baby and 3 year old!!!

Also, since you only have 1 child, if you start at $12 or $13, you may want to discuss at some point if you have more kids in the future. Maybe tell her you max out at $15, even if you have 3 kids or so. Some expect an increase with each kid, but that way she knows shes open to more in the future.

I pay between $12-15, depending on how much time they have to deal with the kids vs. sit on the couch while they're sleeping. And I always round up the hours.

My babysitters are both elementary school teachers in their 20's.

Re: how much do u pay your sitter for your BABY?

Im returning to work in the fall and the babysitter I have lined up is getting paid $20 per hour- mind u- shes working Sundays and not steady hours/days, she's very flexible. Some weeks 15 hours , next week 25 hours. ALso, she will be getting paid 2 weeks vacation( $500 per week). She is a 40 year old woman with TONS of experience and most importantly she is willing to be very accomodating for our schedules. My twin Chat Icon Chat Icon will 15 months then.
