How much do you donate to your volunteer fire department?
They left us an envelope today and I'm not sure what the norm is.

I feel the same way, but DH worries that they won't respond as fast if we don't donate, so we sent $20.

We donate $50-$100 per year, and I wish it could be a lot more. I grew up in a house full of volunteer firefighters and EMT's. I watched my family members wake up all hours of the day and night ... and most holidays ... and respond to call after call. These people give unselfishly of themselves day after day ... they need our support ... despite the departmental surpluses. Plus, my own son ... who is disabled ... has been rushed to the hospital at least two dozen times during the past five years by our volunteers. I commend these men and women ... I don't think people appreciate them enough. They deserve the donations and the deserve our thanks!
And, just a final thought ... despite the fact that many people don't donate, I don't know a single firefighter that would delay response to a call because a family didn't or couldn't donate. Simply not true ... at least with the volunteers I know personally.

Not true. We had an emergency and we never donated and they came in literally 5 minutes.
After that though, I did give them $25.

This is so true!! My DH and I both volunteer. We leave our familys dinners to help complete strangers we go nights without sleep to help again complete strangers. I dont think thepublic really knows what we do till you do it. All I can say is take our pager and respond to calls for 1 week. Also go to the endless hours of training that is needed to keep up with new building construction and new medical protocals. You will never look at us the same again. My husband and I risk our lives to save your families lives. One day you will need us, try to remember this when people are putting down what we do. I dont think that $25 a year is alot to ask for what we do.

I would give as much as you could manage. My grandfather was a volunteer and chief and he died in the line. I joined the FD a few years ago and 2 months later my house burned down. It was a basement fire and they managed to salvage most of the first floor, so our picture and irreplaceables were wet and smelly, but not gone. Even a few dollars toward new equipment makes a difference.
