Re: How much information should be revealed to the public regarding potential terrorist attacks??

The government should definately alert the public if they find a threat creditable. If they did not it would cause to much confusion with everyone seeing the increase in police and tighter security for some areas. Not to mention if they do not say something and the media finds out about the threat, there would be weeks of articles and news stories on how the government is covering up information.

The government sifts through numerous threats a day and if one comes across with some sort of plausible concern then we all should be aware to keep an eye out.

all very good points,...but what about the crying wolf syndrome....if the gov't keeps giving us warnings and nothing happens...then will will stop listening...and there may be a time that we should have listened but ignored it.

I guess this is why I feel so mixed on the subject.

another reason I'm so mixed though is very personal...my DH is a SGT in the NYPD...so these threats scare me because if something happens he will be on the front line of things.

What is the big deal about crying wolf- it is the public's reaction. 90%o f what we worry about, doesn't happen. And if the publicity foils a terrorist plot, we are all the better for it.

Your DH being in the NYPD is something else entirely. I'm sure you worry about him, no matter what the threats are. I'm sorry that you are concerned-but know that he is doing a great service to this city- and chances are he will be just fine Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am actually more scared about that. I am moving out to LI from Manhattan from Nov- April- and I am more scared about danger on the LIRR and Penn Station than I am about getting to my office in Times Square every day from the UPper West Side. I'll be happy when I am back in the city.

Go into Hunters Point and take the 7 to Times Square - you can avoid Penn completely. Its great - I do it every day.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am moving to the South Shore of Nassau County and the express train goes to Penn Station- plus with being pregnant and all- I want the smoothest, most comfortable ride possible.

Do you really think doing this is worth it?
ANY train, subway area in NY is susceptible to attacks?

Is what worth it? Going through HP Avenue? Um, yeah it is because it cuts 45 minutes off my commute each way, each day. I've been doing this since before 9/11.

I used to commute to the city and only do occasionally now, but I doubt it would change anything for me. I feel like the chances that I will be on that paricular car or train or bus at that particular time are not large enough to prevent me from going about my business.

I am not sure if seeing soldiers in Penn Station post 9-11 really made me feel better, but many people I know said they felt more secure. Maybe this is pessimistic, but I am not confident that they would be able to stop it in time if the threat progressed to the point where a bomber was actually there, ready to pull the cord. As Don said in an earlier thread, these guys don't care if they live or die, and if they are about to be apprehended, I think it's already too late.

No, but it is nice to NOT have to go through the tunnel every day. Plus when I do go through Penn I have to take 2 subways instead of just one. Hunters POiont cuts a lot of time off my commute.

In her defense, she is worried about her 'daughter' as she calls me and especially now she is worried about me and the baby.

Re: How much information should be revealed to the public regarding potential terrorist attacks??

I would definitely want to know and I think they should release reasonably credible threat information to the public. Like many have already said, it's up to you what you do with the information but at least you know.

Granted, I'm also concerned about the "crying-wolf" syndrome more so in the way that constant publicizing of vague threats may desensitize the public somewhat. Eventually, it could get to the point where people are just like "another day, another BS threat" because nothing happens. So to an extent, I think we do have to rely the government's judgement of what to release.

But IMO, in the end it's better to know, even if nothing happens. The reason that nothing happens could also be because of the release of the information and that is not a bad thing.

As for me, having the info probably won't make me change my daily routines, but if I was planning a special outing or something, I might reconsider my routes or methods of transportation, etc.

I am right across the street from Penn station right now...

Penn has been closed (part of it) for a few hours now because they "found" something...I'm sitting in my office watching the people in the out of space suites going in...

doesn't bother me personally...I still have to get on the train to go home tonight.

I think it's horrible that we even has these idiots running around blowing themselves up...and being threatened all the time...but gotta live right?

edited to say:

yes, I do want to know. why? I just like knowing...
