How much would you budget to furnish your house
Assuming you are getting ALL new furniture, and using none of your old furniture.
Fairly good quality, nothing too extravagant, but not cheap either.

How many rooms are we talking? I would say a couple thousand each room..

how many rooms? Dining room, den, kitchen and 1 bedroom...at least $15,000 if not more. OUR formal living room was almost $8000 with sofa, chair, 2 seater and ottoman with tables
ETA: living room instead of dining room...

Oh, I don't even have a house yet. I'm just thinking when I budget for saving for a house, I have to take into account the furniture, since we don't have anything right now that we would save (except our tv and stand).
Say 6 or 7 rooms. For arguments sake.

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
are you planning on furnishing all of the rooms right away? for example...if some of the rooms will be used as children's bedrooms in the future you may not need to furnish them yet unless you are using them as guest room.
DH and I just started looking at furniture. The dining room set we liked will run us about 5K

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
we dont have the house yet but have been looking around for things we like to get an idea of how much we are going to spend....
we plan on keeping our couches for now since they are fairly new - but we need a new TV stand - im looking at one in Crate and Barrel that holds the flatscreen on a panel similair to the look of hanging it on the wall - i think that is around $800
bedroom set from Pottery Barn - Canopy Bed, Armoir, Dresser - 5K
king size mattress price TBD
office furniture from Pottery Barn about $2,500 (desk, file cabinet, chair)
2 bar stools for breakfast bar in kitchen - $350
casual dining table and chairs - saw a set a Raymour and Flannigan for 1K plus an antique chest for china also 1K
thats about all we have looked at so far - trying not to spend too much b/c we'll also be doing new light fixtures, ceiling fans, area rugs and accessories (think linens, pillows, blankets), shelves, picture frames, art etc. - and thats on top of new flooring throughout, new cabinets and hardware and a granite counter
im just trying to plan in case we get the house (which we are for)

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
depending on where you shop and how much you really need vs. would like to have, you could spend $15-20k easily. We bought our DR & master bedroom set and that was about $6k.
But I know someone that bought all their future for their new house (2 bedrooms) for $10k at Ashley furniture.
For us it was what was priorty at the time we moved in. We didn't need LR furniture and we did not furniture the two other bedrooms. So just the DR & MBR is all we needed at the time. We will upgrade our LR over the next couple of years. GL saving! It's great that you are thinking ahead.
ETA: Also check out JCPenny for their furniture sales. You could really save a lot of money that way.

anmd by the way...you dont need to furnish the entire thing right away...we didn't get the living room until almost 2 years after!

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
We are planning to just get couches, Master BR, and kitchen table and chairs right off the bat…we are going to use the furniture we have to furnish the rest for now and replace as we go. The couches we like are $2K from Raymour & Flannigan. Master BR we’re going to go a little less expensive, but we’re hoping for under $3K for Queen Bed, dresser w/ mirror, taller chest/dresser, and nightstand. Having shopped around for furniture a lot over the past month, it definitely REALLY depends on where you go….

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
for good quality pieces, at least 50k. living room and den furniture can easily run 10k per room (couches, chairs, tables, entertainment unit). don't forget to also budget for accessories, area rugs (if needed), window treatments, bedding, lighting and patio furniture.

I know this seems high, but I kind of agree with this. It's so hard to furnish that many rooms at once because it's so expensive.
Our den is by no means extravagant and it was almost $7k. Sofa and loveseat from Macy's, entertainment center from Raymour & Flanigan, rug from Target, TV, accessories.
My bedroom is head to toe Pottery Barn. I got everything for 40% off bc one of my friends worked there at the time and it still cost me $4k - plus another $700 to paint it!
Start saving now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness my DR, nursery and guest room were hand me downs! Otherwise they would still be empty!

I agree with this too. Middle of the road, 30,000 or so. Higher end, 40,000 and up.

That's the plan!!
We have a down payment (in bonds). My instinct is to want to buy the biggest house we can afford, but I know it's better to buy a less $$$ house and have money left over for savings, furnishings, etc. It's a hard decision to make!

Isn't the rule of thumb. 30% of the value of the purchase price?

think you misread the question. if your formula was accurate, my furniture budget would be over 200k .

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
we owned no furniture when we moved into our house except an old kitchen set, a bed for the quest bedroom, a flat screen TV, and a leather love seat. We moved in july and still are nowhere near done! But at least we are in a home. We figured each room is about 5-10K. Of course then there are all the little accents, lamps, electronics, rugs, and such. We have no more budget because the plantation shutters alone threw it out the window. So we buy as we can.

This is exactly why it is taking us a long time to furnish our house, we are estimating more than 50K It is insane!

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
Even my broke azz self agrees with the 30- 50K. BUT...I have lived in my house for 14 years and just bought master bedroom furniture this past August. (with wedding money) It just wasn't a priority. My 3 kids all have bedrooms that are done, but I didn't. My XH and I did the den and dining room first but even that took a few years. I am glad I waited though. My taste has definitely changed over the years and I am very happy with the choices I have made.

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
yea, its hard, furniture is expensive....
i know that for us, we might not get our office furniture or bedroom set right away - i want to focus on having our kitchen done, our dining area done and our family room done - that way we can still enteratain and all of our main living areas are done....
the high cost of furnishing is why we have been looking at things now even though we aren't sure if we got the house yet - we figure it cant hurt to look around and try to find things we like - that way if we do get the house we know where to start and how much its going to cost us....now i know what things i like and what we can realistically afford if things go through...
also, i dont think anyone mentioned outdoor furniture yet....you might want to include that as well....i know for us we'll def need a BBQ, lawnmower and a seating area and table for our patio (its florida) so we'll need and want those things right away (or at least want them!)

Re: How much would you budget to furnish your house
I can't even imagine - we had some furniture from our apartment and then got or had a lot of hand me downs (we moved into our house at the same time my parents got all new furniture so it worked out!).
It really depends on your taste too. The estimates of $3,000 per room sound right for the bedrooms, but I would think living and dining rooms could be MUCH more - $6,000 and up for some sets.
We are going to be living with our old stuff for a while and updating the house itself - electric, bathroom, washer/dryer, etc. first. Who knows when we can get new furniture!!
