How much would you estimate a baby costs?

How much would you estimate your baby costs (minus childcare costs) per month for the first year?

This sounds about right!!
Diapers b/c they are small when you buy the big packs from costco or bjs you get SO many more in there then you do when they are bigger ( but it evens out b/c when they are older they need to be changed less)
Wipes were about the same
and formula was between right around that price as well!!

Honestly my sisters friend hit the nail on the head when she said we make having babies SO MUCH more expensive then it has to be. Seriously does the baby care if its wearing Nautica, Ralp Lauren, and Tommy clothes??? Its just as happy in clothes from TJMaxx and walmart! ( I am not saying everyone does this but I honestly do! My son has more name brand stuff then my husband and I do combined!) We also dont have to go crazy buying them every toy and every gadget Babies R us Sells ( guilty of this too!!)

Yes it is definitly more. With breast feeding you have the initial cost of buying a good pump but after that you don't really need anything formula is a constant expense every month for the first 12 mos.

Depends on what type of f ormula your baby is on and what brand of diapers you use. Wipes, Cream for your baby's bottom. I really can't give you an exact amount but it is expensive but its so worth it.

I know people say they wantto be financially ready before they have a baby but I don't think you are ever financially ready.

Hmmm... anything else? That only totals $136/month... I can't believe a baby only costs that.

Clothes, towels, sheets, toys, books, etc? Something I'm not thinking of...

Re: How much would you estimate a baby costs?

We spend something like this per month:

Formula (Enfamil): About $150 per month

Baby Food (jars): About $75 per month (this started at about 5 months old and now he eats like 5 per day!)

Diapers (pampers): About $40 per month

Wipes: $15 per month

Clothing: About $50 per month (but we get a lot of hand-me-downs as well from relatives)

Misc: (toys, books, cereal, pacifiers, snacks, bottles, gear, etc.): About $100-150 per month.

I will say that you could do it a lot cheaper than that now that I look at it!

Most of those things you get at your shower. Even with my 2nd child I didn't have to buy many new things. Clothes are not too bad if you know where to shop (outlets, target) and look for sales. People are buying clothes in the beginning too so you have alot then.
Believe me, my dh and I do not make alot of money and we do it.
Good Luck!

Re: How much would you estimate a baby costs?

I think the next biggist thing is if you need / when you need to pay for daycare.

eta. It also depends on how big of an eater you have on your hands. My nephew went through ALOT of formula a month!! So while we were able to do it for around $100 each month my sister spent $150 +

( we both used the exact same formula)

I think the above estimates are pretty accurate. In the beginning you will spend more to get everything set, but we also got so many gifts that we didn't have to buy much.

Diapers $35
Wipes $15
Jar food $40 (starting around 5 months)
$20 for diaper cream and bath supplies
Claire is BF so its free!

Maybe an extra $30-40 for a few new toys or cloths, but this is often not necessary.
