How often do you get highlights done?
Kelly Clarkson's picture got me thinking about roots. I always heard that you're supposed to space out highlights but I loathe having roots. How often do you do your highlights (assuming they're not ombre)?

How often do you get highlights done?
I try to stretch it out to every 3 months because it is so expensive. But, if I have a big event like a wedding, I try to keep that in mind and space it so that I'll get them done no more than one month before the event. (But I have medium brown hair with auburn/copper highlights - not dark hair with blond highlights)

I shoot for 3 months because that's what I was told you're "supposed" to do but I always have bad roots by that time. I have light brown/dirty blonde hair with blonde highlights. So it's not like dark hair with blonde roots but it's still noticeable and drives me nuts. I also am in dire need of a haircut at that point.

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
I have very dark brown hair and was getting highlights every 6 weeks, alternating between a half head and full head every time.
Since my roots were so dark, I felt I needed to go back so frequently. I did this for years.
My hair was getting worse and worse. I told my colorist I wanted to gradually go back to a darker color. Instead she put low-lights in, in addition to the highlights. The color would eventually wash out, and it all looked so harsh.
I had so much breakage, my hair looked like straw, and the bleaching looked so unnatural.
The above is an example of what NOT to do. -----
I'm now getting my hair painted instead of highlighted, and she only highlights my hair every 3 months. She originally dyed my hair back to it's natural color, and then brightened it up by painting on highlights. This past time, she asked me to put it off for another month longer at least (so 4+ months between highlights). We're working on growing my hair out, getting a healthier base, before highlighting again.

How often do you get highlights done?
I go 10-12 weeks depending on if I have any major event/holidays coming up. I have naturally dark blond hair and highlight pretty light blonde.

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
Ideally i should do it every 8 weeks. I usually stretch to 10-12 though and by then I have major roots.
Also, to save SOME money I alternate been a full and a partial. So I will get a full head, and then next time I start to see roots I do a partial. Then next time a full. Works fine and saves some cash

How often do you get highlights done?
I used to do highlights every 3-4 months, and single process in between. It was such a pia-I went back to my natural shade about 7 years ago, and haven't dyed since. That being said, I will have to touch up gray t some point. Eek

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
I go about 3-4 times a year. I do double process each time. So she lightens my base color then does the highligts. It grows in so nice and I always get complimented on the color.

I am wondering if that is a color highlight instead of a bleach highlight. Where they use hair color to do the highlights rather than the bleach. I had to start doing that too because my hair is beyond wrecked from bleach highlights. Breaking all over the place, bald spots. Its terrible. Color highlights are much easier on.the hair.

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
I got painted highlights - its called balayage. I think it gives a more natural look. It grows out much less noticeably, I am very happy with it.
There is some bleach, you have to have bleach if you are lightening your hair.

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
Oh man.
I go 1x a year.
I didn't realize some people go so frequently! I guess my hair grows super slowly because it doesn't look bad.
Last time I did highlights was in July. I'm going in 2 weeks. But I have my color touched up every 8-10 weeks

Re: How often do you get highlights done?
I guess it's because I don't do color but I don't understand how you could color your hair and not redo your highlight growth. Does it look ombre?
I'm clearly not a hair stylist so I know nothing about that. It just doesn't make sense to me but clearly many people do this. When my highlights grow in I have a clear root line, which drives me nuts.

The painting is highlights without using foils. They literally paint the bleach on your hair, and they do it in a way that it looks more natural and matches the way your hair grows in.
I go to Hairstories in Babylon. They have a lot of before & after pictures on their website. They are awesome there. If you click on a stylist's name, you can see their work.

I don't do a single process in between, but I can tell you I was way too blonde too plus my hair was a breaking wreck from the bleach. So what she did was switch to a color highlight rather than a bleach. My old, too blonde, highlights still show through, so it's not too dark, but much more subtle and less brassy/harsh. She did a hi and a lo lite with color. Then when it was done processing, she took the foils out and just put the lowlight color all the way through my hair- didn't leave it on too long. She called that breaking the base. It toned down my base color and toned down the highlights. Now it's perfect. And healthier.

Yes she went to a salon- she is very good, but I didn't feel like paying those prices, so I went to someone else who is closer and works from home. She is the one who did this latest color.
