How often do you weigh yourself

I used to only get weighed when I went to WW every Saturday because I had a horrible scale.

I just bought a new scale and have been on it every single day. I need to stop this because I think it's too depressing.

What do you do?

NEVER.

I refuse to look at that #.

Muscle weighs more so in the #'s game that's always been high for me. It would always discourage me. So I stopped judging myself by the scale.

So, now it's just how things fit.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

I've gotten better. I used to weigh myself about 5-6 times a day (I had major body image issues). I got down to once a day...now I'm trying for every few days. It just becomes an obsession after awhile and its not healthy. So I'm trying to limit how often I weigh myself.

Muscle and fat weigh the same.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

Um 2x a day Chat Icon Morning and night...I just want to see for myself.

My WW weigh in is Sunday and I must weigh myself right before I go. First I don't want to be surprised when I get there and also I want to see how close my scale is to theirs.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

muscle is more dense than fat. Density plays a role in weight in comparison to size, but a pound (16 ounces, 454 grams) of fat weighs exactly the same as a pound of muscle- or a pound of anything else for that matter. Muscle tissue is more compact (more dense) than fatty tissue. Therefore, one cubic inch of muscle weighs more than one cubic inch of fat. This is mostly due to the water content of muscle. Fat cells are stored in adipose tissue, and fat is oil. Water naturally weighs more than oil (relative to this article). So a gallon of water (8.3 pounds) would weigh more than a gallon of oil.

Muscles contain intramuscular fat deposits, even in very lean persons. But speaking only of the two types of tissue, a person of the same height and girth etc. who was very muscular would weigh more than someone who had a much higher bodyfat percentage of the exact same dimensions.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

I weigh myself twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. I find it motivating to see my number each day and I like to see how my number varies depending on what I ate.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

very rarely. I find my weight can fluctuate so much over the course of one day.... I don't know which number to believe. And then I get depressed over it.

I go more by how my clothes fit & how I feel in general, I can usually tell if I gain a few or lose a few without weighing myself.

Interesting information. Thank you for posting. I was aware muscle was more dense than fat but this is new information to me. I love learning more about diet and fitness so thank you for posting this!

I know the number on the scale doesn't accurately reflect weight you might have gained as a result of muscle, but I haven't taken this new information into consideration.

Also, Although my body fat percentage is in the athletic range, I still don't see the extra muscle affecting my weight. Do you think this information applies more to someone who might fit in the "body builder" category?

same here, I'm obsessed with being a certain number range. I actually like to eat healthier and exercise a lot and when I "feel thin" I get on the scale. It's like cleaning your house before the cleaning lady comesChat Icon

Never. I personally don't find it helpful. I know if I am eating healthy or not. That's what matters. I have been working out & eating healthy for about 20 years now and it took some time to get this attitude but it does come. I have learned the scale can be detrimental to your healthy lifestyle. I feel that if people see the number go up or stay the same they try to overcompensate by starving or working out more which often leads to binge eating and that is a vicious cycle. I feel often when people see the number go down they think that means its ok to go nuts and eat junk. I know some people say they find it motivating to see the number go down & it helps them stay on track but in general I feel it leads to obsessive behavior and unhealthy attitudes about food and one’s body. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but like I said it took me a looooong time to get here. It’s about health to me, the body you want comes as an awesome side effect to a healthy lifestyle.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

Don't go by me but 1-2x a day. I just like to see my numbers and make sure they are in my "good" range. I dont get mad or depressed over it, I just think okkk time to start eating healthy again. I never let myself gain more than 5 lbs, that is how I keep myself fit, by weighing in. Yeah I could do it on a weekly basis but the numbers can go up or down depending on how much water I drink, how much salt/sodium I took in, going out to eat, etc. So I just do it every day to check in and know that it fluctuates day to day and that is normal. Some people say its bad to weigh yourself alot but hey I am in ok shape and never let myself get overweight. This is my method and it works for me.

Also side note - I usually eat pretty good but go through phases where I eat out every day for lunch. Or I will be on a chip and dip fatty fat kick. Sometimes I gain weight from this and need a wake-up call that I need to start bringing my own lunch again and cut out some crap. I dont starve myself or anything like that, just cut back the bad stuff.

Re: How often do you weigh yourself

I stopped doing it because I get very disapppointed when I see that the pounds are not coming off as fast as I want them to, and I start slacking again.... So I made a deal with my self that next time that'll get back on the scale will be when I start feeling like my pants are getting loose around my waste.

Once a week at meetings.

Never at home. Ok, not never. Maybe like... twice a year at home.

DH weighs himself once or twice a week at home and then once at his meeting too.

Every once in a while...I have weighed myself probably 6 times over the last 6 months. Sometimes, I go through periods where I weigh myself more often though.
