How prevalent do you think before & after school day care needs are?
I am thinking about this as a possibility. We are moving to a private gated community and this may be something that I could do and get to stay home. Anyone do this or use someone?

Our district offers it at the schools, so that's who I use. I would probably use a neighbor though if the cost was the same.
Just to give you an idea, they charge $12 a day for aftercare (3pm to 6pm), $7 for before (7am to school opening). I know Sachem and Patchogue Medford charge around the same.

That is about what I was thinking in terms of cost...about $20-$25 for both. The positives of using me would be more flexible hours (before 7am and after 6pm) and emergency care. Also, being in the neighborhood with hot breakfasts and home cooked snacks.
I'm just playing with the idea right now.

Re: How prevalent do you think before & after school day care needs are?
There is definitely a need. For example, in my daughter's school of approximately 800 kids there are only 60 before and after care spots and they are very sought after. The other options include the Y, and local child care centers who, then do the busing back and forth themselves. The only caveat is that the bus will have to drop off at your home which usually means you can only accommodate children at your local elementary school.

I think it is a good idea. A couple of the women I work with use the after school programs that their district offers. I know there are a limited number of spaces though.

Re: How prevalent do you think before & after school day care needs are?
For me, it's definitely necessary. I'll try to find out what my district charges for you. I signed up for autopay ages ago & have since forgotten.
I think it depends on the area, what time school starts, how much the district is charging. I know that my old town, most of the moms are stay-at-home & therefore don't need it. If you lived close to the area that you work, you would need aftercare, but not before care.
For my area, the earliest drop off is 7:45 to the elementary school & 8:04am to the before care program. Not ideal if you work in the city & need to be there by 9am.

My daycare provider offers this as a service to the parents and believe me, there is a HUGE need for this.

Re: How prevalent do you think before & after school day care needs are?
I think their is a huge need for before or after school care. Many of the teachers I work with have the hardest time in the morning or afternoon depending on hours and where they live and etc...

Re: How prevalent do you think before & after school day care needs are?
Just wanted to update you with prices for before/after care for my district.
$275/mo for Extended Kindergarten rate (drop off is 8:04am until the bus picks up for morning class, I believe 11:30ish)
$255/mo - for aftercare - 2:20 school lets out, they can stay there until 6pm.
Daily rate is $14.80 but that has to be signed up for in advance & has a minimum amount of days.
