How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
My DD is 2 1/2 months old and seems like she is never satisfied after her bottles...I feel like alls I do is feed her.
Im gonna ask the dr if she can have a little bit of cereal...do you think she is to young?

Re: How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
I gave DD about a tsp of cereal starting at about 2 1/2 months. I think it all depends on if they show they are ready (how well they hold their head up, do they take interest in you eating, can they swallow cereal without gagging). DD held her head up great and she had no problem swallowing the cereal, although she would only take lik 3 or 4 spoonfuls before she was full.

How much/often are you feeding her? Can you give her bigger bottles? Or will she not take more at any sitting? 2.5 seems young to start cereal, i would ask your pediatrician.

I was wondering the same thing. DS at 2 months was on almost 7 oz of formula every 3 hours. At the time he was having nearly 40oz per day. now he seems to be content with 6-6.5 oz every 3-3.5 hours.
I think I would try increasing your DCs formula first. But ask your peditrician.

My DD is 2 1/2 months old as well and from 2 months she never seemed satisfied. My DD is drinking half of her weight in milk (between 6oz to 7oz). Uping her milk amount helped a bit but she was eating that every 3 to 3.5 hours. So I started giving her RC and it constipated her. So I tried oatmeal cereal and that did the job. Now she can go up to 4 hours between bottles. And it helps her sleep pretty much through the night (she gets up once). Ask your doc 1st. The doc will probably yell and say no. But do what you feel is best for your DD. Also watch out for constipation and allergic reactions. My DD can hold up her head really good and has mastered chewing/swallowing.

Re: How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
I gave my DD very watered down rice cereal @ 6 weeks. She wasn't sleeping at all. & all the "older" women I know, and women with 4 + kids told me to add it to her bottle. I didn't feel comfortable doing that, but, she loved it off the spoon and took to it. Helped with her sleeping! It's your child....

I still haven't started yet, but my doc gave the ok at 4 months. When DD was around 2 months she was never satisfied either... but I just gave more formula/bm.

Re: How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
I specifically asked this question to K's ped on Friday when we had her 2 month checkup. The convo went as follows:
Me: Being K takes cereal in her bottle, does that mean that we can start cereal as meal sooner?
Doc: ABSOLUTELY NOT
Me: Then when?
Doc: AT THE SOONEST.... 4 MONTHS - NO WAY NOT BEFORE.
Me: Ok! You're the doc and you know best.

Ok, you all have me thinking that I'm starving my child based on what I'm seeing what other babies his age are drinking. He's also 2 months old.
He'll eat 4.5-5 oz of expressed bm every 4 hours. He SEEMS satisfied, but what exactly am I looking out for? Is that too little?
BTW..sorry for hijaking this post.

SERIOUSLY ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!!!!! I never get offended by the posts on this board but I think you are WAY out of line!!!
IMO there is a difference in your child not being satisfied and needing to eat every 3-3.5 hours. An average infant will eat every 3-4 hours. That is normal. NOt being satisfied is crying after the bottle is done looking for more, or looking for more 30 minutes later and being inconsolable because he/she is hungry. Those are 2 different things.
My son eats every 3-3.5 hours, he is NORMAL, I am NOT a nazi because I dont give my 3 month old cereal. I go against the dr when I feel it is justified, it is not justifed if I go against my drs advice because I dont feel like feeding him every 3 hours (which again is NORMAL time for him to be hungry). Thats would be just me being lazy or selfish.
(If you give your child cereal under 4 months for other reasons or truly because your child is hungry this is not directed at you!)
The other thing, is that DS is a comfort eater. Meaning, when he gets cranky or upset he wants his bottle. Now if I feed him, he spits up a lot, but I think he feels if he is going to s#ck he might as well do so with a bottle and not a paci!
WE use our discrestion as parents but how dare you point a finger and call people names because of their choices!
ETA: LIBOund you are doing fine. Every child is different. My son was almost 10lbs at birth and 16lbs at 10 weeks. 4-5 oz never satisfied him. My friends DD is 9 days younger and she takes about that amount of formula now.

Bm is different then formula. Your body adjusts the properties of the bm as your baby grows. Formula is always the same so you need to incease the quantity or frequency. My baby is 3 months and he eats one side at each feeding. When I pump I get 4oz from it.
As for cerel my ped said not before 4 months but he prefers I wait till 6 months.

I think this is unfair honestly. I am not a young mom, that has nothing to do with it
unless you baby has refulx, I would not give cereal until 4 months or so, but that is just me, an old mommy's POV

You are totally not doing anything wrong! Feed your little man what he needs to eat, not based on what other mommies are feeding their kids. Every child is different!

Re: How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
I don't plan on giving DS anything before the doctor recommends it. From what I have read, it is also believed that starting children too early on solids may contribute to food sensitivities or allergies. since we already have allergies in our families, I am not going to press my luck.
My DS is a big baby. At the 3 month appointment, he was up to about 7 oz. per bottle, about 4-5 bottles a day. The ped told me if his appetite increased, to give him no more than 8 oz per bottle or 40 oz per day. If he maxed out at that before 4 months, then I could start the cereal. At 4 months, he still hadn't reached that maximum, so we just started cereal this week at 4 1/2 months.
My baby would never make it to 4 hours without a bottle during the day after 3 months old, but he is getting all his formula during the day, since he is sleeping 10 -11 hours at night now.

IDK, if you consider me a young mom, at 32, but I do listen to what my ped says. he told us no cereal until 6 months (she was almost 2 months early)and she started it a few weeks ago with no problems. I don't think it's wrong to follow what peds say.

I had two 10+ pound babies and we waited until 4 months with both (as per ped), although everyone told us to start cereal. My ped suggested water instead.

Exactly!!!!!! My baby was 11 1/2 pounds and I heard it all from the older generation that he needed more at an early age. He was EBF til 6 months and thrived!

you misunderstood my statement. the lady said that the "older" women she knew did things differently then what their pediatrician had told them. so i asked her if she felt as if "younger" women followed the pediatricians advise more then the older generation. and when i said "nazi" i was saying it because there are certain people who "shun" other people if they do something their pediatrician told them not to. just because my pediatrician says no it doesnt mean i have to go with what they say. but there are people on this message board who right away make other people feel like bad moms because they are going against the doctors orders. each kid is different. my daughter used to get her bottle and be looking for more. am I going to starve her? no. if i choose to start cereal at a younger age, is that wrong? possibly. BUT its still my choice. all im saying is just because im choosing to do something "differently" doesnt mean i should be shunned upon or called a bad mom. and sometimes people make other people feel that way.
so i was just asking the lady if she felt like the younger generations follows the doctors order more then the older generations. thats all.

Re: How soon is to soon for the baby to have cereal?
I personally wouldn't give cereal at that age. Starting solids too early has been linked to diabetes later in life along with food allergies. Not a risk I would be willing to take to be honest. Babies also have an open gut until around 6 months of age (depending on the baby) and they can't digest the solids properly. Try feeding more formula. FTR..I'm not a "young" mom.
