How to collect poop from a cat?

Stupid question alert!
I'm supposed to bring a sample of my new kitten's poop back to the shelter this week so they can check to be sure she's clean (he was exposed to something while he was there, so he was on medication and they want to make sure everything is good).
I know I'm supposed to collect it the day I bring it in, and I know it needs to be refrigerated (ew)...but do I have to follow him around and wait until he uses the litter box so I can scoop it up immediately? Or can I just check in the box and see what's waiting for me?

So gross.

You dont have to follow him around...just wait until he goes and scoop it up. Its fine if you dont pick it up right away.
