How to deal with problem middle school kids?
We're starting to have some issues with the Middle school aged kids in our neighborhood. They've already broke the neighbors Halloween decorations and now yesterday they put spray cheese on the bumper of my car. It wasn't a lot but it was still there and on the driveway. And today there were a bunch of cheese cubes on our driveway? (I guess they're using their lunch? I know it's kids being brats, but there's a good chance it will escalate. I haven't been able to catch them in the act, but I know they're doing it as they're going to the bus stop in the morning since there isn't anything there late at night. Right now it's stupid stuff, but what if it gets out of hand? They also damage neighborhood property as well. I'm now worried about Halloween. They may really damage my car then? Any suggestions? Now, that I'm the mom/older one it's so different. I'm also mad because when I was a kid, I had my problems and was a trouble maker, but I would NEVER do anything to anyone's property no matter what.

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
if you think they are doing it on the way to the bus stop I would try and watch them and catch them red handed and then speak with their parents

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
That's what I'm concerned about... their parents are dirtbags themselves so they're not going to care.
Does this warrant if I catch them doing something to call the cops? It's just not right.

Call the police non-emergency to report property damage. Feel free to give them evidence on when it's happening.
If you see them going toward your decorations call the police to report who it was. Feel free to take out your video camera if necessary, take the parents to court for costs if you want to escalate it.

Agreed.
Send DH outside with a garden hose. (I like that idea!) Getting them all wet right before school will teach them never to come back. I wouldn't worry about retaliation either. They're going to know that they can't mess with you if you catch them red handed and will stay away. Def. do a stake out to catch them! It'll be worth your time!

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
Can you buy those little signs saying that your house is being video monitored? Then take it a step further and go to their bus stop and tell them you will be watching them, if they are in middle school that should scare them.
If not I love the garden hose idea definitely!!!

I was going to suggest turning your sprinklers on but I like the idea of the DH with a hose ambush better

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
I have worked in a middle school in the past, where there were kids who would do these types of things, even though the parents could care less. If it is happening on the way to the bus stop, I would contact the school. At least where I worked, they would step in.

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
That's tough. I don't trust that some kids and parents wouldn't try to retailiate, especially if they are dirt-baggish.
I'm interested to hear what others have done though that has worked.

Thanks everyone!!! But, this is what I'm worried about, retaliation. I wouldn't put it past them to slash my tires, etc.

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
I would set up cameras around the house & the next time those little criminals in the making vandalize your home, I'd try & find out where they live & advise the parent if it happens again, they can expect a police report filed against the kid.

Re: How to deal with problem middle school kids?
I'd call the school and let them know what the bus stop is and that there is a problem and what is happening. The school will know what kids take the bus at that stop & who to address. Good luck!

Or call the school. We have problems with the kids at the local bus stop and this is what I did.

I am also a MS teacher and I would defintely contact the school, especially if their parents are not the type to discipline them properly.

I agree. I wouldn't do anything with the hose (although you would like to)...this could later be used against you in court as a claim of assault on them at your hands.

Wouldn't I have to catch them doing it and know where they live?
