How to dress for a family photo
Okay I need help. We have never taken a professional family photo and we are going next Wednesday. I have no idea how to dress all of us. I am not a matchy type of person so I won't have us all in white polo shirts. I want us in our normal clothes but I want it to look good. Any suggestions?
How do you guys coordinate your boy and girl children? I have no idea how or if they should coordinate. My DS is 5 months and my DD is almost 3 yo.
If my daughter has a flowered shirt and my son is in stripes will it look ridiculous? Should we stay clear of patterns?
I am going to make myself crazy with this.

Re: How to dress for a family photo
I think that although it's def not necessary, family portraits do look alot nicer when they are coordinated.
So to answer your question, if your DD is wearing a flowery dress, I'd dress your son in maybe a pair of khakis and a white button down, or something that coordinates. The same for you and your DH.

totally steer clear of patterns! Go for solids.
When we did ours, we wore jeans and white shirts.

You dont have to all wear the same thing...but coordinating colors looks best.

I def agree on all points.
Personally for me, i'd keep everyone in solid colors too.

Re: How to dress for a family photo
Those are great tips!
We've had family portraits in all black with black background and with white shirts and jeans (light background). They always came out terrific.

I don't like the matchy-matchy outfits either, so we all wore shades of brown (I wore cream, DH wore light brown, and Jackson wore dark brown). In our second shoot, I wore a red sweater. DH and Jackson had on warm colors, just not red, and it looked fine. You just don't want to wear colors that clash.

Re: How to dress for a family photo
Thanks everyone. I will have to look at the JcPenney tips.
I think I am up a creek. My husband and I have nothing that coordinates. My kids do not have anything that coordinates and most of the kids clothes are stripes or some type of pattern. I am going to have to go shopping for all of us. Wow, I thought this would be a fun thing for the family. I created a sugar load of work for myself.

I think if you go for solid shirts or something without to much on it. Soesn't matter what color it is.

I would stick with solid color tops. I have heard that wearing black tops helps draw attention to the face.

Re: How to dress for a family photo
This was our Christmas pic of the kids...
I put them all in jeans and white shirts and then the little kids had on coordinating plaid...
So you and DH could do the Jeans and white shirt thing and then maybe put the kids in coordinating colors of some sort..

This is what I was thinking after spending an hour in our closets last night. I think DH and I will wear black and the kids can wear coordinating outfits.
Your family is gorgeous btw.
Thanks!!

I agree with coordinating. maybe white shirts, denim and just a little drop of color or print on the kids.
and Ive seen family shots (summery ones) where everyone is barefoot, and they come out awesome. (I know thats a love it or hate it thing )

Re: How to dress for a family photo
I love the barefoot look especially since my little one will definitely be barefoot. I am not sure my husband would love that though. He is not a barefoot kind of guy.
The JcPenney tips say that black is slimming and white adds a little weight. White is great for the family, but not so great for me. Black it is! I can not put my little ones in black. So DH will probably wear black and the kids can wear lighter coordinating colors.
