How to find reasonable car rental using two different pick up and drop off locations
We are flying in to San Francisco this summer and do the Pacific Coast Highway drive to LA. So we are renting in San Francisco and dropping off in LA. I am shocked at the prices they charge you to do this. Any advice or tips on how to get a reasonably priced car for a week? The best I did was a little under $500. They charge at least $150 to drop off at different location.

Unfortunately, it's super expensive to do this. Try looking directly on the rental agency's website and hunting for a discount code (AAA, credit card affiliation, etc.)
If you are a costco member trying looking on there (I always get a great deal on a car rental through them.)

Call a travel agent. They can compare rates and often have perks to give you the best deal.

I booked through BJs when I did that same trip 2 years ago and didn't get charged that crazy amount. We were so scared when we got to the rental place that they were going to say that it was an error but they didn't say anything. I can't remember what rental company we used though.

I am doing this at the same locations! Did you book your rental yet? I need a mini van and they are so expensive.

I have 2 reservations on hold! Avis and Dollar. Dollar was the cheapest and supposedly doesn't have a late charge. Avis told me if i rerurn more than 29 minutes late i pay for the whole day!
Its still about $40 more than if i did a return back to MCO!
I used the code Chep for dollar! Great discount

I find the easiest way to look at all the companies at a glance is orbitz.com Then i usually go to the one which was cheapest and book direct.

Re: How to find reasonable car rental using two different pick up and drop off locations
try pricing it going the other way (from LA north). might be cheaper... it all depends on where they need cars, etc. we did the CA coast a few years ago. our friend lives in San Diego and was getting married. we flew into SF 10 days before the wedding and drove the coast. SO GREAT!!! we couldn't believe the rental car prices either!! and it was definitely cheaper to rent going south to north. BUT in our case we had the wedding, and we couldn't to the road trip after the wedding because I had to get back for work (teacher). anyway... it was definitely cheaper to go in one direction vs the other... so price it out both ways, if that's possible for you.

Thanks so muchy.
Unfortunately airlines are already booked, and now hotels. I have been searching and the best price I got was through BJs for a little over $300 for a week. I like booking directly with car rental company but the company they are giving me, Dollar, is $600 more to book directly through them and I checked everywhere else. Not leaving for another months so I will still search more.
