Re: How would you feel if this was your 1st grader's spelling words list

DS has almost the exact same list of words. While he's been spelling and writing those words for 2+ years now, I'm letting the teachers (who went to college to learn how to teach, and have been teaching 6yos slightly longer than I have) teach they way they think is best.

There's nothing wrong with having DC spell other words at home. DS often writes his own stories (and does his own illustrations and book binding), with his own storylines, so I'm not worried about him not being challenged (at least not yet).

I agree with the teachers who have posted here about assessing everyone's skills, and reinforcing success. What good is it if, at the end of the school year, 10% of the class can spell above their age level, but 90% of the class now hates spelling, and school in general because they always felt left behind, and always had a hard time. Save that pressure for high school....

I would think that someone is finally treating my child like a 1st grader and not plowing him over with overwhelming academics at such a young age, like how 1st grade used to be before it became the new 3rd grade.

If your kid is smart, your kid is smart. Learning spelling words like that in 1st grade is not going to hold him/her back if you expose your child to literacy, and he/she is observant and naturally inquisitive about things, how they are spelled, etc. Let kids be kids in school. I hate teaching to standardized tests, which is all school has become these days Chat Icon

I'd think the teacher is still in the process of assessing all of her students and is not going to overwhelm them before she's sure of where they're all at. If it continues, I would ask her to differentiate a bit by adding more difficult bonus words, etc., but I would imagine it's going to get much more difficult and she's still assessing and reviewing at this point.
ETA: Also remember that not all kids have the background in spelling. They may have been in more relaxed K classes, not attended preK, etc. First grade is really the first grade that is mandated for kids to be in. I know plenty of kids who go straight to first grade and have never been formally in school. If this is a public school, there's probably a lot of kids in the class and will take the teacher some time to know all of her students' levels and abilities. I teacher in an independent school with small classes of like 12, and I know the first grade teachers are still doing assessments because it takes time. HTH.

I completely agree. My 1st grader is not a strong speller/reader & it sounds like they're focusing on sounds more then spelling. Although some of those were her sight words from Kindergarten.

Me too.
Those words seem perfectly appropriate for the third week of first grade.

Definitely appropriate. As a first grade teacher myself, the spelling words are words they should spell phonetically. I'm sure you will definitely see as the year progresses, the words should vary in difficulty. However, if you feel your child is not being challenged enough, I would speak to the teacher and ask if you can have a more challenging list. (either extra credit or something you can use at home)
