HR people! Please offer some insight.UPDATED with addtl info
Please tell me what you would think if:
You go to work this morning and you get there 5 mins late. Upon arrival the boss is on the phone ranting that you are unreliable, the company has bent over backwards to accomadate you and they will not tolerate your absence/ latemess anymore. She then asked for your keys to be turned in to the supervisor on duty and thanked you for all of your past work.
You give your keys to the supervisor, say your goodbyes and leave.
Do you think you were just fired or you are quitting?
ETA: With the above stated, the boss calls the supervisor on site and asks if you are still there. The site supervisor says no you turned in your keys and left. The boss starts ranting about how you just walked off the job and she will make sure that you dont get unemployment.

Re: HR people! Please offer some insight.
they asked for the keys back, you were fired... now go collect UI off them
edited to say: thats a really screwed up way it had to end with them, no matter what the situation was, they should have done it in a more profesional way

Re: HR people! Please offer some insight.
I agree--sounds like you are fired in that situation.
They told YOU it was your last day, you did not tell them...

The boss fired you by asking you to turn in your keys.
What did you say to the supervisor when you left? Did you say that the boss told you to give them the keys back?

The conversation was on speaker phone with the site supervisor present.
It actually wasent me but it was a girl that I work with in my office. I feel really bad for her. She's a single mom of 3 kids and has a really hard life. She didnt need this and now Im afraid that she wont be able to get any help until she finds a new job.
After the boss called back and wanted the site supervisor to call her back, we havent heard from her. I cant say that I blame her.

She was fired and if you want to keep your job i wouldnt say a word. Shes already gone regardless of what you say to them. I would not get involved at all.

Re: HR people! Please offer some insight.UPDATED with addtl info
not in hr, but that sounds like they were looking for a reason to have you fired and your tardiness (even though 5 minutes is riduclous to me) was their way out. a dumb way out i might add, but a way out. kinda sounds like what happened to me though - your boss or whomever didn't like you and this was personal, not b/c it NEEDED to be done.
again, not in HR, but i don't think being asked to turn in your keys = being fired, in general. if a company lost tons of $$$ and needed to lay off employees b/c of it, wouldn't they ask those people to turn in their keys?

You can fight it, but if your company says that they had cause to fire you, then I don't think you can get unemployment.

I would take that as the employer terminating the employee - especially the thanks for your past work...sounds like goodbye to me.
I also feel that the actions of the boss after the incident are an attempt to turn it around on the employee as job abandonment to avoid unemployment.
