HS Teachers

Do you require your students to write in script on exams or assignments that are not required to be typed?

Just curious

TIA

No. I find that script can be more difficult to read. I am lucky if their print is legible!

Re: HS Teachers

Not at all -- as long as it's legible, I don't care if they print or write. I do care that they remember to capitalize words that need to be, but that goes for typing too...

Re: HS Teachers

Nope I don't ever require students to write in cursive. Most of them can't do it or forgot how. They either print or type things.

No-- many don't know how (a lot of my students have enough trouble with writing in print)-- I'm just happy if they write anything at all!

No, I don't. Most of their handwriting is horrible to begin with! A lot of them also never learned how to write in script, which is pretty sad!

Re: HS Teachers

no offense to the HS teachers, but this is so discouraging for me to read! as a 5th grade teacher, i already see how we on the lower grades have let cursive slide. since the testing mandates have trickled down now all the way to 3rd grade, we do not have the time to teach cursive the way we used to. they get it in third and it's forgotten in 4th grade because of all the state tests and in 5th grade we have all the state tests and tons of curriculum to get through. so i guess if they didn't master it in third grade, it's never required of them ever again???

The sad thing about this is that the kids really DON'T know how to write in script. I've proctored the SAT's (in my own school), and when the time comes for them to rewrite and sign the declaration, they FREAK OUT because they don't know how. It's crazy. They're not that nervous for any other part of the exam.

Re: HS Teachers

I know that my friends who teach 3rd and 4th grade do not explicitly teach script. I don't require it. If they don't know how and were never taught, we can't ask them to do it. Unfortunately I think it is sad that they are not given instruction in it!

I teach sixth and I've also taught seventh and eighth. Lots of kids don't write in script. I have been told more than once that they aren't taught. I believe it- all the time is given to getting them ready for tests.

I remember learning to write in script in 3rd grade. I was so excited! And being allowed to finally use pens in 4th grade was a huge thing. Now it's like pulling teeth to get them to use pens. It makes me nuts. Chat Icon

Why is it discouraging? We have our own individual curriculum just like you do, and no where does it say reinforce script. As previously said, if they didn't learn or haven't mastered it, how can I require it? Am I suppose to include a lesson for script? In my classes they have the option

print or script

pen or pencil

If it is a project or heavily graded assignment, it is required to be typed.

I think discouraging was the wrong word to use considering I am seeing them 7 years or so after elementary instruction of script.

Re: HS Teachers

I just read an article somewhere about how script is going to be a thing of the past. In the near future- most schools will probably have computers for the students to use for everything. Handwriting just isn't as important as it was in the past. As long as they can print- I'm okay with it. P.S. I teach HS and never write in script on the board or on comments.

See, I do write in script in comments (and only occasionally on the board), and they CAN'T READ IT either. It's not just writing it. And I KNOW I have pretty neat handwriting. I've even had kids ask me to help them figure out how to sign their names because they don't know how to write the first letter of their own names in capital script... and I'm talking about 11th graders...

Same here. I, too, often use script when writing comments. For me it is faster to use script then to print. I went to catholic school and script was so important there.

At the high school level, the students have credit requirements and graduationa requirements to content with. If cursive is going to be taught and enforced, it needs to be done at the elementary level where yes there is the pressure of state exams but there are more opportunities to teach cursive.

IMO, I would rather my high school students take a typing and computer class and have skills in that area rather than master cursive. There are not many times in their lives when they are required to write in cursive.

By the time a student gets to high school they should have mastered cursive writing. However, because they haven't we cannot require them to write it and I am not teaching it since I have regents and other curriculum concerns that I have to get them to pass or they are not leaving high school. I write in script on the board and my comments are in script. If they can't read it, they ask. If they don't ask, I won't know. I remember when I was in grammar school, my teachers made us write everything in cursive.

I didn't mean to come across as insulting the HS teachers. What i meant was that it is discouraging in general that no where in their education careers do we (and i mean all teachers here) teach, reinforce and require script. we all have such limited time and stupid state tests and copious amounts of curriculum to get through that i just think it's unfortunate that none of us have time to reinforce the basics.

sorry if i cam across as blaming high school teachers. that was not my intent.

I wanted tot add that I see what you mean with this. I teach middle school and most of my kids can't write in script. (granted, they are in special ed, but still)

When we were in elementary school, it was a much greater priority. I remember not being allowed to write in print EVER in 4th grade. It seems like it's not like that these days.

Wow sorry all didn't mean to start anything, it's just that my 16yo is in 11th grade and he doesn't write in cursive and can barely remember how to. I am not an educator just a parent and find it sad that he does not possess this basic skill

My script stinks, I couldn't ask them to do it...LOL

I do think that they should be taught it, just to learn how to write quickly to take notes faster
