Huntington school districts

I still think it's too far out but we just got burned very badly on a house in Lynbrook and of course have a bias against everything there I think we'll wind up there but I'd like to do some comparisons and I love the town of Huntington despite how far it is to the city and DH's job in SW Nassau.

That said, I have NO idea about school districts in Suffolk. Can someone tell me which (if any) are good? We're really not just looking for 'ok', we want an excellent district (Herricks and Lynbrook have been the two we've considered thus far) so if none of them fit the bill, please tell me that too.

I've seen listings with:

Huntington
S Huntington
Elwood
Harborfields

I just moved away from Huntington SD. If we had stayed there, I would have sent dc to privatel school. The school district is good but I'm not crazy about the social tensions that are found in the middle school and up.

Harborfields is one of the best districts on LI and Elwood is also very good. I would have been very happy to send my child to either one.

As far as the commute to NYC, from Huntington it can be very easy. Depending on where in NYC you are working - hop on the 7:12 express (which is waiting at the station ) and you're in NYC within an hour.

I live in the town of Huntington and absolutely love it! I am actually on the Melville boarder, not far from the Walt Whitman Mall.

I am in District #13 (S. Huntington) and did research before buying. I know a lot of people who love the district, can't say enough good things about it, etc.. BUT again, it's all about what you want in a school district and that is what you have to look at NO district is going to have everything positive and everything you need and want.

Harborfields and Elwood are great as well.

I grew up in huntington district number 3 - went to public school through 8th grade - the high school has a lot of good classes and sports programs but there is a lot social BS that blocks that

we are looking for a place now - we will look in cold spring harbor, elwood, harborfields, and northport even though my parents still live in huntington - the districts have a better reputation

I grew up in Huntington and went to Huntington schools through high school. I had a great experience. I think it has changed though. My friend teaches in an elementary school there. She says that elementary level schools are really good, but after that...not so sure. I honestly don't think it's in the league you're talking about. Like others have said, Harborfields is still really good. I don't know anything about Elwood. And you're right about the commute. Lots of people don't mind it, but I did it via LIRR for many years. I HATED it. I also commuted to Hofstra for years. The problem about the section I grew up in (near the village) is that it took forever to get to the highway. I do still love Huntington though. It's a great town. If I still lived on LI and neither of us commuted to NYC, I would have looked in Harborfields. If we were commuting, I'd look in Port Washington, Manhasset, Jericho, Syosset, Rockville Centre, Merrick, Bellmore, Massapequa.

ETA: Half Hollow Hills is also really good. But, again, not a great commute to NYC (IMO.)

I went to District 13 schools(S Huntington) and I think I had an excellent experience. The district is close knit and Walt Whitman HS has tons of AP classes, a great marching band and other music programs and lots of sports teams. Parents were very involved when I was there.

I just moved back to the district and my children (when I have them) will go to S Huntington schools. Also, the South Huntington library is awesome! tons of programs and big and pretty new!

All that said, I know Harborfields is considered "excellent."

We live in S. Huntington and are buying a house in S. Huntington too :) From what I have heard, the Huntington SD isn't that good, but the S. Hunt is. I really don't know much more than that.

i went to sd 13, my neices go to sd 13 and now my stepkids are going to sd 13 since they moved in with us. every school you go to will have undersirable things going on. i guess i'm biased to say that sd 13 is one of the good ones on long island. we had more problems with the oyster bay district believe it or not when my stepkids were going there.

Harborfields is one of the districts we are looking in, and will feel comfortable sending DC to this public school.

The commute from Huntington to NYC is not that bad (its not as convenient as Queens, but doable).

My niece and nephews are in the Harborfields district and are doing really well. My brother and SIL are really happy so far.

I grew up in Huntington Station and went all through South Huntington School district. I think it's a good school distribt - it's very diverse. I'm sure you'll get some negative responses on the district.

Although I know school ratings are very important to people, I also feel that your children are going to get out of school what you put into it as well. Meaning I went to school people who are now lawyers, doctors, bankers, nurses, police officers, etc.

I loved that Huntington was the midway point for the island. I always felt that it was 10 minutes to everywhere. I love the village too.

Lots of my family and friends that I went to school with stayed in the district after they married.

I did my student teaching in Huntington and my friend did hers in South Huntington. They are both similar when it comes to the middle and high schools. I would not send my child to either of them.

On the other hand, I have heard wonderful things about Harborfields.

yes to Harborfields and Elwood

big no to huntington

we had Northport in our possibilities, but we just crossed it off as there seems to be a big drug problem in the HS (this is from SCPD who works security there) - the school is too big and some kids have access to too much money and it was compared to Huntington's problems.

Harborfields and Elwood are the closest comparables to Herrick, IMO.

We just bought in Elwood SD. we don't have kids yet, but we have only heard excellent things. it's a very small district, with only about 150 kids in a gradutaing class in the high school.

harborfields is excellent, but much bigger. the taxes are also very high in Harborfields.
