Hyperemesis

If you had hyperemesis, how did your doctor treat it? Did the medication really help?

I'm due in February (wasn't going to announce until 20 weeks) and I've been so ill I can't keep anything down. I can't even drink water without throwing up, some days I can barely get out of bed. I've lost about 15 lbs already and my doctor is concerned. She wants to start me on anti-nausea medication and have me go to the hospital to get I.V. fluids but I'm nervous.

She also told me that now I'm considered high risk and have to have more ultrasounds than usual, is this normal for hyperemesis patients? Are you high risk until it goes away or for the whole pregnancy?

First off, congrats.

Second off, sadly, if it is hyperemesis, it does not go away. There were a bunch of us who just had our babies who had it.

I lost 13lbs in the first 13 weeks, then I was put on Zofran. I never had to get an IV b/c the Zofran started to help, but I was dehydrated a lot and had ketones a lot. It helped, I could keep water down, but I was never hungry. At one point, I had to switch to Reglan b/c my insurance wasn't covering my Zofran refillsChat Icon

I had to take it my whole pregnancy. All total, I gained 3lbs and even threw up the morning I was induced.

I am sorry if I am freaking you out, but it really does s*ck.

Don't drink water, drink gatorade, water is very harsh on your system. Eat whatever you can keep down. Grilled cheese was something that I could always eat and ate a lot of.

FM me if you need any informationChat Icon

Thanks Chat Icon

I can't imagine living like this until February. The worst part is I never feel hungry. I eat because I know I have to, but the urge just isn't there. I think its because I know if I do eat, I will throw up.

I'm just praying the meds work, because I haven't really been able to do anything with my kids lately.

I was the same way. I never wanted to eat either. Just eat what appeals to you. I ate a lot of plain stuff, peanut butter and bread, grilled cheese was a godsend, pancakes, etc.

You have to be religious about the meds, if it says every 3 hours, take em every three hours.

Honestly, this is the main reason that I don't want to be pregnant again, I cannot phathom going through it again.

As soon as he was out of me, I felt better.Chat Icon

Re: Hyperemesis

This was me....and I was a lot like Kate.

I started getting sick at 6 weeks and by 15 weeks it got much much worse rather then better. I threw up pretty much everything I ate and then after a while just stopped being able to eat anything because I was nauseous 24/7.

The nausea was worse then the throwing up b/c the room would spin, I couldnt stand up and would be crying from it.

I was in the ER twice for the IV fluids and admitted twice for a stay.

I was on Zofran the entire PG but the pills stopped working for me and the Reglan never worked...

Finally I got insurance to approve the Zofran infusion pump around 24 weeks pregnant. And I was on An infusion pump through IV in my leg till a week before I gave birth ( and I was still sick then)....

I saw a high risk Dr for monitoring bloodwork wise b.c I was very anemic and had about zero nutrients b/c I couldnt handle vitamins or anything with protein etc....

Anyway I had growth sonos pretty frequently....and urie tests b/c I was so dehydrated. The girls at the dr's office used to laugh and ask why I put my name on my urine sample b/c it was always dark orange and they knew whos it was.

It eased my mind when I couldnt eat as I would feel guilty. But my baby is 6 weeks old today , healthy and a very average size at birth.

I felt better almost right after birth ( I was still nauseous but from the C-section, not the hyperemesis) ..

Like Kate, Im not trying to scare you but prepare you for the worst and then hope for the best...

Actually I have now almost (almost) forgotten the worst of it. I rememeber saying, I will not survive this..but I DID and now some it I dont even remember...

Try the Zofran. Its very very safe to take from all my research on it and GOOD LUCK! Chat Icon

She wants to but I was nervous about it since I'm still breastfeeding my son. She told me I should stop because that will just make me weaker but I really don't want to Chat Icon

Chat Icon Thank you for all the information. I'm glad to hear that you had a perfectly healthy baby after all of that.

The nausea and fatigue have gotten so bad I can't even drive. I feel like I can't see sometimes.

I think I'm going to call her tomorrow and go in for the I.V. fluids and medication. I really hope I start to feel better because this is becoming unbearable.

Re: Hyperemesis

The IV fluids helped me SOOO much. I would feel better. sometimes still al title sick, but so much more managable . not that I cant take this sick....and the Fluids help for a few days.

What happens is the dehydration makes the nausea soo much worse since its a symptom of dehydration.

And I couldnt drink water EVER , it made me throw up teh entire Pregnancy. I lived on Gingerale. Literally bottles of it a week.

Yeah, I drank a lot of regular Pepsi because it would calm my stomach.

Donna and I went through it together, if you need to ask any questions or anything we both dealt with it

My son is perfect just like Noah. My doctor kept reminding me that HE was fine, I just was the miserable one.

ETA: I would try to stay away from Reglan since it makes you sleepy. I could only take it at night with a B6 supplement during the day.

Wow I am sorry to hear you are going through this. I suffered from Hyperemesis myself along with other medical issues. I am almost 31 weeks with my 2nd HG pregnancy and from time to time I still throw up so I have two doses of Zofran a day AND 24/7 Reglan infusion.
My first pregnancy the Hyperemesis lasted til I was 6 mths pregnant with numerous trips to the hopital and I had a nurse from Matria to administer meds and fluids-I was pretty severe since I couldnt even stomach bites of food like some could. Since you may be able to handle bites-grilled cheese may work for you. Pedialite pops are good so is gatorade-I could stomach NONE. If it gets to that point let your doctor know you may be more severe like me and need an IV 24/7 which does make you feel better.
THe majority of HG babies are healthy and average size just like any other pregnancy-Mom just needs extra monitoring along with baby. Email me if you have any questions.

Re: Hyperemesis

um, first I can't believe your doctors have not treated it yet or even considered it whe nit first started. this is the major problem with dr.s and mis diagnosing HG. I am a HG survivor 2x over. So I know your pain all too well. I was mis diagnosed with my DD the first time, although was trerated with anti-nausea medication. I was sick the entire time. With my second pregnancy I started HG at week 5 (with DD it started at week 7) I was hospitalized several times, IV's of fluids and medication, steroids was pumped into my body only ultimetly loosing the pregnancy early on at 10 weeks. I had severe HG at that time. this time around I am a little over 5 weeks and nothing to date. I have been following a research program for HGers and so far it is helping. Taking herbal medications, detoxing your body, eating right while TTC and trying to remain as stress free as possible.
you should talk to your dr. immedietly about getting on Zofran ( Honestly it did noting for me, however it helps a lot of people out there, so it's worht trying, keep in mind it constipates you, so ask for a stool softner).
also, see a high Risk dr. as well now. talk top them about going natural. Milk Thistle is to promote healthy liver (this is where your vomitting and nausea is coming from the toxins in your body the hormones are producing). Also, Wild Yam Root is for the nausea and vomitting. If you have any questions please FM me. Good luck to you and your baby. My main advice is to act now with your docotrs. don't suffer anymore.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Hyperemesis

Thanks for the information everyone. Chat Icon

I've started drinking gatorade instead and I've kept it down so far, which is good. I still can't keep any food down but at least I have liquids in my system.

My DH is picking my Reglan prescription up after work. My doctor said to give it a day or two and if it doesn't work she'll give me Zofran. She wants me to come in for I.V. fluids if I lose any more weight so I have to keep track of it. I see her later this week so hopefully we'll come up with a good solution.

I think I have to start seeing a high risk doctor and I'm not sure how that works. Do I see both doctors or just the high risk one? I've never had any big complications in my pregnancies so this is all new and scary to me. But it makes me feel better to know there are other women who made it through with perfectl healthy babies. My DH keep joking that at least I'll be down to my goal weight soon Chat Icon

Thanks for the help ladies I really appreciate it.

If you cant keep it down another option is the Zofran which goes under the tongue and dissolves or you can get the reglan pump which administers the medicine directly into your skin/body via a tiny catheter (not too painful) and you get the meds 24/7 and change the site every 2-3 days. If you need more info FM me.

Take it with crackers or bread and peanut butter.

With the Zofran it would work for me within 20 minutes.

Or a Zofran pump. That is what dm24angel had. Chat Icon

ETA: Call your dr and ask about the dosage b.c I am 99% sure that I was told not to drive while on it.

Re: Hyperemesis

The reglan made me tired too, and it actually increased my anxiety sooo obadly that I already had and it gave me the shakes, like a Parkisan's type shake....which I then heard was common side effects.

Not to scare you but I would have wanted to know that it was normal symptoms just in case.

Reglan is cheaper then Zofran so they tend to go that route first.

Gatorade also helped me. Lemon or Lime or Orange.

Citrus is a great help and also ginger in any form helped me.

also..a tip...try a lemon. Even the smell of lemon has a natural anti emetic effect to calm the stomach. I would carry lemons in bags all over with me and suck on them and it would take the edge off.

Heres a GREAT website, I got a lot of good tips on coping from them...

And just hang in there. There was a time I went about 5-6 days with only a few bites of food and it all came up , even fluids and I made it through, baby is ok....so even at the worst, it gets better and you and the baby will make it.
