Hyperemesis-confused
(1) Curious is this the same thing as Morning Sickness or is there more to it?
(2) Has ANYONE out there had morning sickness for their first child and the second pregnancy was perfectly fine?

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
1. It is morning sickness, but it is way worse than just your average case of it. I vomited constantly, 15x a day. I was put on zofran b/c I had ketones in my urine, basically that I was dehydrated.
It is hormonal. I had a friend who is a NICU nurse, who also did a L&D rotation tell me that it was similar to women who have recurrent m/c in a way, b/c your body is fighting the pregnancy.
2. I do not know anyone who was fine for the second pregnancy. Chances are (85-90%) that it will be worse the second time.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
Hypermesis is MUCH worse than just MS - it is constant vomiting that results in real problems if it isn't treated properly and many cases end up in the hospital if they can't be controlled with zofran. It is not something that you want to mess with - b.c it can cause severe dehydration, vitamin deficiency etc.
I wasn't throwing up much with DD but I was constantly nauseous with DD - so that I could barely eat. In addition I had severe heartburn/indigestion and food aversion to meat.
I am 17 weeks now and am having a great pregnancy with this one. I only had very minor MS at night for about 3-4 weeks with no vomiting so far and no heartburn as long as I eat every few hours (even a small snack works). So I definitely think it is possible to have a bad pregnancy followed by a good one.
Etd to add - I think Hypermesis has a large chance of definitely returning in other pregnancies- but plain MS (severe or nomal) may or may not.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
Hyperemesis is the extreme. It is excessive vomitting that can lead to weight loss, dehydration and other problems.
I was verrrry sick with my first pg. So much so, that I was considering not having anymore children.
Then 3 years passed, and I told myself that every pregnancy is different, and that I may not get sick the 2nd time around.
My first pg was a girl, so I fuigured the extra female hormones is what made me sick. Wrong!!!! I was sooooooooooo much sicker the 2nd time (boy).
I was bedridden for about 6 weeks this time. The first pg I was able to function, this time, I was totally incapacitated.
But, I lived through it and have a beautiful 3 1/2 month old baby boy.
Am I glad I did it ? Absolutely. Would I do it a 3rd time? Not for all of the money in the world!!!!!!! I had my tubes tied~!!!
But, it is true, every pg can be different- not just for the worse, hopefully for the better.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
HG is 1 million times worse than the average morning sickness.
HG is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the newborn.
Unless you suffered from it, there is no way to explain or describe how you feel. You literally feel like you are dying. Picture having food poisioning all day everyday. The simple task of taking a sip of water would make me violently throw up. Broken blood vessels in your eyes from vomiting so much and hard. I mean the list goes on and on.

THIS is very true. You have no idea unless you've had it (hence my post) you have no strength at all from the constant vomiting.
Ro, I give you SO much credit for doing it again

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
OK, so what did I have... Vomiting from week 6-18, totally nauseaus, on zofran, never hospitalized but talk about zofran through IV . I made it to week 18 and it subsided. IS that just severe MS (not avg or is that leading into hypermesis? Just wondering if I did indeed have ONLY MS is the chances better that it may not occur again?

From my knowledge and research, that is severe morning sickness, not hyperemesis. I could be wrong, but I was told that hyperemesis does not go away. My doctor didn't even want to diagnose me with it until I was past 14 weeks b/c most m/s goes away by that point and I wasn't hospitalized until I was 16 weeks.
I hope I don't seem like I am making your experience sound less than it was, but I don't think that was hyperemesis

Everything I learned about HG is from the intenet and support online group. I can't answer your question since I'm not a dr, BUT I would say you were on the verge of HG, especially since there was talk about IV. Your dr would of diagnosed you with it if you had it.

No, actually you make me less worried about it happening 2xs...those statistics are God awful!!!!!! Also, you made sense of it bc if in fact MS is a shorter period of time...then thats one very specific distinction. I never heard of hypermesis so its interesting yet horrible to learn about.

HG never goes away , but it can subside for some patients. I know for me, the 2nd pregnancy around 6 months I started to feel semi-normal again. I still was nauseaus and vomiting, but it seemed like the IV was actually working rather than the first 6 months when it was more like an accessory, LOL!

Yes and unfortunately the 2nd pregnancy was much much worse. They were speaking to me about terminating the pregnancy because my health was in danger from the HG.
ETA: I had more health issues the 2nd time around. With the first pregnancy I had the vomiting and weight loss and nausea. The 2nd time, I had all of that plus very low blood pressure and rapid rapid weight loss. I was losing pounds by the week

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
I was the opposite. I did not get sick at all in my first pregnancy. This pregnancy, I had pretty severe m/s. I was throwing up several times a day & I felt nauseated 24/7. This all went on until about 17 weeks.
I don't know much about HG, but I guess I'm proof that "normal" m/s can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
1. It is so much more than morning sickness. I threw up 8-10 times a day until about 28 weeks.I lost more than 30 lbs throughout the pregnancy. For the first 2 trimesters as soon as I got in the car I was throwing up, we kept a bucket in there because of it. I survived off of mini waffles and gatorade. Couldn't prepare food because the smell of things made me vomit. I could barely even move at all.
2. With hyperemesis the chances are around 90% that it will return and be worse than the first time. With regular morning sickness it is different for each pregnancy IME.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
1. HG is very severe and for a very small amount it can subside but the majority have it for well into the 2nd semester and some have it return in the 3rd tri--some have it during the entire--there is no set guideline just its severity.
2. HG can be much worse the 2nd time around. Chances are if you had it bad the first time there is minimal chance of having a regular pregnancy the 2nd time around. In my case my HG was so bad the first time that it damaged my digestive system so my 2nd pregnancy developed other complications that will have lifelong effects. My doctor said its rare to see an HG patient with severe HG ever have a normal pregnancy.

Re: Hyperemesis-confused
My heart breaks just reading this. I agree that no one can ever understand what it is like.
I had a very close friend tell me this last pregnancy she couldnt handle me complaining about my morning sickness and I was rocked to the core by how little people understand about it.
There are people who die from this, and the rate of termination of PG's is so high.
I remember telling my Best friend during Noahs PG that " nothing was worth this" ...Can you imagine? I prayed for this baby for years, spent 10-15 thousand dollars to have him and I couldnt get pass the fact that I wanted to die versus get sick another day.
the misconception that is just bad M/S is wide spread and leads people to think we are "crazy" when we complain....But living sick almost 24/7 is just agonizing....
anyway, just had to share that.

Interesting... I always tell people how I couldnt fathom continuing with the pregnancy. Yes, I love dd but I remember also wanting to die waking up every morning with it. I am hoping for the best next time around.

Wow Donna you bring back memories for me too. Friends and family can break your heart definitely but I find its becuase they dont understand--I realize that now. I think thats why so many of us suffer in silence.
TMI PART HERE My worst was a doctor in Queens who told me it was in my head and I should swallow the saliva and nasal drip--WTH. When I went to LIJ another quack said the same thing...after my 2nd hospitilization for dehydration it was the ER doctor who had experience with HG and literally squeeze the medicine in the iv to help it along since he felt I could hurt myself if they didnt control the spasms I ws having. So that was my 2nd realization that not all doctors are familiar with HG and the idiot DR. never even called when the nurses recommended me to my new doctor. a GODSEND HR DR and I didnt show up to any appts again.

I was exactly the same way. I laid on my couch 24/7 for weeks at a time. I could barely stand up long enough to shower. I really felt like I had some horrible disease and there was no end to it.
I have a friend who had it 3 times and all she could do for months at a time was lay on her couch smelling a lemon slice. She swore that the lemons are the only thing that made the vomitting stop.
But emotionally it really does take a toll- on the pg woman and the entire family.

That's severe MS...describes me to a T with both pregnancies. It was awful, just awful, but I was able to eat and wasn't vomiting all day everyday until the end.
