Hypo allergenic dog??
DS has a slight dog allergy but loves dogs so much...we are considering a hypoallergenic dog breed. Anyone have experiences with? Is there such thing??

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
My mom is highly allergic but has had no problems with her poodle. Any breeds with hair instead of fur don't shed and should be hypoallergenic.
Something like a poosh ( poodle& shitzu) are cute and hypoallergenic.
I LOVE my cockapoo, but he is only half hypoallergenic, so my mom does have a mild reaction to him.

We have a cavachon. She does not shed at all. My DH has some allergies to dogs and he is fine with her. She is also the sweetest puppy.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
Growing up we always had bichons because they were so good with allergies . They are usually very easygoing and good with kids.

My parents have a Bichon and she's hypoallergenic, and she is great with kids. But, the dog suffers from severe allergies, which is just cruel....

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
bichons like pp mentioned. my neighbor had one and she was allergic to dogs.
My coworker and fH got a goldendoodle because of her allergies. she cost like 2500! But the breeder was very clear that not all mixes with a poodle will be hypoallergenic. She breeds certain lines and traits etc. So be careful about just getting something doodle from an unreputable source.

So how can you be sure that your 'doodle' will have the hypoallergenic trait? I would def spend the money if I know for sure it would be the hypoallergenic one. DS is an only child and really wants a pet.

I would definitely be careful with a "doodle" or any combination where you have one hypoallergenic dog and one that's not. If you're up for a pretty energetic dog, I definitely suggest Portuguese Water Dogs. They are amazing with kids, so much fun, super cuddly (as you can see below) and really smart.

From what I was told, you can't be 100% sure, which is why my mom reacts to my cockapoo. He doesn't shed, but still apparently inherited the allergen. He is half poodle and half cockerspaniel. Since cockerspaniels are not hypoallergenic it was a 50-50 chance.
The only way to be sure us get a mix where both breeds are hypoallergenic. IMO, poodles are too high-strung to get a full breed, but all poodle mixes I've come across are super smart and great! My inlaws have a maltipoo and he is hypoallergenic. Maltese & poodle.

A good breeder will always take back their puppy. In my coworker's case, they visited the litter, picked their puppy from a young age, spent time with her visiting etc. Maybe this is an option so that your DS can see if he has any reaction? A responsible breeder would have no problem with this because they should want to ensure that their puppy goes to a permanent home.
I would just be wary of just getting a poodle mix from say a petstore because I have a cocker poodle mix and you would not believe how different one can look from another. Some look more like cockerspaniels and spaniels are definitely not hypoallergenic.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
You can never be sure. Any allergist will tell you that there is no real hypoallergenic dog. And any dog that may not cause reactions in some will cause reactions in others.

Yea they all look so similar! Its driving me crazy. I'm just going to have to go via a breeder. How can I find a puppy breeder? I'm so scared of dealing with a puppy mill by accident.

Re: Hypo allergenic dog??
Both my DS and I are allergic to dogs and we have a Coton du Tulear with no problems. Doesn't shed and doesn't have much dander which I think is what usually affects allergies. Anyway, small dog, great with kids, but it is a rare breed so not easy to find. Some breeders have long waiting lists.
