Re: Hypothetical question for home buyers/home owners about price range...
I might be the minority here but I have alot less than that in the bank already and I own a home. Even if you have a little bit less than that in the bank you are much better off than me. It sounds like you would be in pretty good shape with the second option but that being said just keep in mind even if you buy a house that is "move in ready" and all updated there are going to be things you will want to change once you start living there that will cost money. Just something to think about...

I would never buy anything with the assumption of moving within 5 years. Could you keep looking to find something more like #2 but more affordable?

Re: Hypothetical question for home buyers/home owners about price range...
I would never buy assuming we could/would move. look at the past few years and what has happened. you can't take that risk. if it could be a forever home, i would pick 1 because you could stay, and you can make changes to make it your own, which i love the idea of, and i like to leave a lot in the bank
But if A can not be a forever home, then i wouldn't even consider it, I would either go with B, or keep looking. if i loved B and it was in the perfect location, I would be ok with buying it with what you said.

B.
Except for the price, what is the attraction to house A? If you think you would want to move in 5+ years, then it's not the house for you.
If house A is essentially house B but without updates, then I might take A.
But it sounds like you would "settle" for house A and not be happy since you would (might!!!) want to move in 5+ years.

Definitely B! I think we are in a similar situation (except we have one kid ). We are going to look at the very top of our range because in 5 years time we will have significantly more money.

idk, this is a tough and unstable economy. I'd feel very uncomfortable w/ the risks associated w/ option B.
When we first bought our house about 4yrs ago. w/ had a decent buffer in our budget. W/ rising energy prices we're living paycheck to paycheck.
