I am CLEARLY decorating-challenged. Please come in and help me!
Oh lord, I just don't even know what I'm doing. I'm not meant for this decorating stuff. I feel like this corner of my livingroom is just dead space, and so I tried to fill it with pictures and what not, and now I just don't even know what to do. Please help me! I hate wasted space and empty space (which is what it was up until yesterday). Give me ideas and opinions please!!! And be honest, because I want it to look good. TIA!!!!!!!
And please ignore the unfinished stairs and mouldings. They're in the process of getting done

I like what you did. Maybe the piece in the corner could be different. Maybe buy something that is a corner piece that is used for storage. Or even a cute little bench in the corner. Otherwise I really like what you did to the area.

a taller corner cabinet or bookshelf would work. Something more 'solid' than a table
Maybe a winged back chair with a lamp or sconce behind it (I am not sure what the whole room like though, so maybe not ...)

Personally, I would think maybe you should move the small round table and take out the square skinny table and get a nice console table to go below the mirror. Or maybe get a console table and mirror that match (unless you are really excited out the one you have)

I would move all the pictures over leading up the stairs, get the mirror out of there and get a solid corner piece with that vase on top of it. I would also spread the ledges a little lower and further apart.

What about one of those furniture piece/wine racks? That would fill the space better and also give you added storage.

Looks good, but I think there are too many small pieces.
I think one large substantial piece would look nice.
Maybe something like this:
Then maybe, a candle sconce on each side:
Throw a tall plant in the corner...viola.

Rach, what is that space actually? is that in your living room going up to the second level? it's not the foyer is it?
can you post a pic of the rest of the room/area?
ETA: if you don't already have one (and you drink) it's the perfect spot for this
first thing when you come down the stairs to start the day...or last thing..to help you crash at night

Re: I am CLEARLY decorating-challenged. Please come in and help me!
You did a great job, but i'd do a couple things different...
First the pictures going up the stairs, i'd add one more further up and move all of them a bit further from the mirror (more into the stairway).
I'd also take out the corner table and add a small table under the mirror instead in white maybe (see below from target). The mirror looks like it's floating, it needs something under it.
or something less bulky
Also if you're open to painting that mirror i think it would look great with a white frame.
As for the other wall, the shelves are adorable, but i'd space them out more. Take that frame down and stagger the shelves further apart. Also if you got them recently i'd get a third one.
Love your stairway banister!!!

That's exactly what I was thinking of. That space really calls for something a little more substancial then the small table you have.

Re: I am CLEARLY decorating-challenged. Please come in and help me!
See, this is why I come here Ok, I will say a couple of things. I'm not in love with anything that's there, plus I have like three more frames that need to go on the stairway. It's actually the landing from the stairs to the second floor and it's in my livingroom. I just used whatever I had lying around the house for now because it was killing me that there was so much dead space. I like the idea of getting a corner unit or a wine rack/storage thing. I will move the pictures over to the stairway more. Let me go get a picture of the entire room so you can see where it fits into the rest of the layout.

I like what you did!
I think instead of the groupings of smaller pictures in collage frames, I'd choose a few photos and really show them off - blow them up to 8 x 10. You can still use the frames - just add different matting. I think with the multiple photos your eye is not sure what to rest on. Maybe a smaller collection of larger, stand out photos would help you get the look you want.

Re: I am CLEARLY decorating-challenged. Please come in and help me!
Honestly, I think you're on the right track with what you've done but I think you need the items on the wall to be on a grander scale.
I would look for a mirror with a thicker frame, and instead of hanging those two smaller collages, I would go with more frames - meaning frame those pictures individually and cluster them on those hanging shelves.
Here are some pictures of what I'm thinking, they're from Pottery Barn...
Or you can do something like this...
Or like this but not dense... I think it looks alittle overwhelming the way they have it clustered so tightly...

Re: I am CLEARLY decorating-challenged. Please come in and help me!
I really like the idea of moving the mirror to the other wall and putting a console table under it so that is what you see when you walk down the stairs.
I love the shelves....I just don't know if I love them there.
I would continue a wall collage, like the one CaMacho posted, going up the stairs.
It's coming together beautifully!
