I am officially freaking out sorry this is long
Why would this doctor do this to me?!
I had my first positive hpt on Sept 18, I called my dr sept 19, they gave me my first appointment sept 20, I went in, I got a rx for bloodwork, and they told me to come in for a sonogram on sept 25, so I did. The tech told me " I dont see anything, I think you are 3 weeks" Based on my last period, Tuesday, when my sonogram was done, would have been exactly 5 weeks.
So I go home that night wondering what is the tech talking about I am most def at least 4.5 weeks, so I search for reason why nothing would show up and of course I find 234034838 sites on ectopic pregnancys and miscarriages....
so now I am freaking out thinking it is one of these two things I called my drs office the next day, and ask if I can talk to the doctor about the tech not seeing anything because I am really starting to panic, and they tell me " im sorry but the doctor is not going to look at the films until Friday" I called on Wednesday, and he isnt going to look at them til friday? I have to wait that long?!
So now here we are on Friday, I havent heard from the doctor...My next appointment is Oct 24....My bloodwork is being done tonight...I called another office yesterday and made an appointment for Tuesday to see a different doctor, whos receptionist seemed to be in shock when I told her the tech said I am only 3 weeks, and I am having tonights results faxed to their office as well as my current doctor.
Is it just that the sonogram was done too early? Or could there seriously be something wrong? What would you do?

First thing first, try to calm down. It's easier said then done, but it's the healthiest thing to do for your body.
I happended to get a sonogram when I was 5 weeks b/c I had an appo't with my high risk gyno (a separate dr. than my OB for an unrelated purpose). When they did the sono, they said you can't really see anything that early and not to worry. It was probably the size of a speck at that time.
I would call you dr. today for the results. If they won't speak with you to alleviate your fears, I would try calling another dr.

I agree
I got my BFP on 9/13. I called on 9/14, but they were closed for the holidays. I called on 9/17 (becasue of seperate issue -- saw blood Sun/Mon and got scared) and asked to see the Dr. They told me to come in and they said it was probably implatation bleeding, because it stopped when I got there.
They did an internal sonogram and the nurse said don't get scared if you don't hear a heartbeat, because you are like 5/5.5 weeks and its too early to see one. All we could see it the sac.
I have an appointment next Thurs 10/4 and should probably see a heartbeat--I should be 7 weeks.

If you're not cramping or bleeding, I wouldn't assume anything is wrong just yet. You might be earlier than you think but I would def go to another dr from now on. Good luck.

At this rate it could be anything, but you should trust your gut when it comes to how far along you are.
I don't want to scare you unnecessarily, but at my first sono, my doc said I was 2 weeks less than I said and I was 100% without a doubt positive that I was supposed to be further along. I went back a week later and it seemd to have caught up a little, but still not at the point I knew I should be. 2 weeks later, there was no heartbeat and I had to have a D&C. I knew something wasn't right all along, but the doc went by what he could see.
It was heartbreaking, but now I am due in 8 weeks and my year is turning out great where in January I was so sad.
Sorry to rain on your parade, just wanted to be up front. It could definitely be miscalculation on yours or the docs part though, ANYTHING is possible.
Stay calm though.

Re: I am officially freaking out sorry this is long
My first appointment with my dr. I was 5 weeks. When my dr did the sonogram you couldn't see anything at all. The only thing he did tell me was that he could see that the lining of my uterus was thick and in his words "sommething was happening there". When I went back two weeks later then we were able to see the sac, etc. I'm now 24 days away from my c-section!!!
Good Luck to you!

Re: I am officially freaking out sorry this is long
If you are 5 weeks or 5 1/2 weeks it is possible not to see anything yet. My doctor waited until 8 weeks to do the first sono because she said not seeing anything could make me worry unnecessarily. If you are not having any bleeding, you should be okay but try and call the doctor again.

Re: I am officially freaking out sorry this is long
Normally pregnancies are counted from the first day of your last period - which would be 4 1/2 weeks you say. But literally the baby is 2 weeks behind that - it's called gestational age because the first two weeks you technically weren't pregnant yet. So the tech may be referring to the gestational age instead of the norm. Most offices won't even see a patient via sono until they are 8-12 weeks - unless you are seeing an RE (at the RE's I got sono's from weeks 5-8, as well as blood work, but that is because we were having problems getting pregnant). At 5 weeks all you could possibly see is an empty sac if there is any. I happen to see two empty sacs at that time and are now having twins. The bloodwork is what the dr. should be going by now. Your beta's should be doubling every 72 hours to show you have a viable pregnancy. FYI - If you get the numbers what I've been told if they are 1,000 and they can't see a sac, then it is considered ectopic. Not to give you too much info, but I would just wait and get the numbers. You truly may be too early to see anything. Even though I was having weekly sono's, I still did a few pregnancy tests at home to calm my fears. Have you taken more than one?

I take one everyday, and the line was faint at first, and now its darker...so I guess the hcg level is going up..I keep trying to tell myself it was too early, but cant stop worrying

Re: I am officially freaking out sorry this is long
First off, calm down. Second and just as important, it is RARE to see anything on a sonogram before 8 weeks. If you do see anything it is just a sac, nothing more.
I'm curious why did you wait almost 10 days to have bloodwork done?? Usually bloodwork is done ASAP and then repeated in 3 days IF a problem is suspected.

My husband and I were away fri-monday night, had the sonogram tuesday, the lab was closed wednesday...it just wasnt working out, so today I am going... I have a bad habit of passing out after I have blood taken ( its happened 3 times before ) so I really didnt want to go alone, yesterday was no good for dh, but today he left work early so we can make it

Tell the lab you want the results ASAP and will be calling in 3 hours for them. It shouldn't take any longer than that to run a beta on you.

Also make sure that you are both using the same method of calculation. For example, 5 weeks LMP is only 3 weeks gestational age.....
