I am really upset with the Huntington YMCA. What would you do?
Before we moved to this area, we used the Great South Bay YMCA and loved it. It was brand new, clean and very well run.
When we moved to Northport almost 2 years ago, I assumed that the Huntington YMCA would be the same.
Last year, DD attended vacation camp while I worked. I didn't love it, but she was safe and occupied.
Summer camp, same thing. I found it to be a little disorganized, didn't love the counselors and wasn't happy with the after care situation.
However, DD loved it. So, I signed her up for vacation camp this week and summer camp.
DH and I both work, so I asked about the busing option ($900) for the summer. They can't tell you when your child would be picked up or brought home until 1 week before camp.
That won't work for us, because we both work. We need to know to plan things. So, I paid for before and after care ($600). DD hates after care and asks to be picked up early every day..which we obviously can't do.
When DH went to drop her off at vacation camp at 8 am on Monday, he was told that before care was cancelled due to low enrollment. Really!!! No one called us, nothing...So, DH had to sit there for an hour till it started. They apologized, but offered no other solution.
Today was my day to go into work late, since we had no other child care option for her. When we get there, we followed another Mom and child into the class room. As soon as we entered, 2 woman who were working the camp said "You need to wait outside, camp doesn't start until 9." Then she walks us out and shuts the door. It was 8:57...
After waiting until the correct drop off time and leaving for work, I am gone for about 1 hour and my cell rings. It's one of the women.. "Your DD is crying and wants you to pick her up. "
What? Seriously? I just left her there and she was perfectly happy???? SHe put DD on the phone and she said that so and so wouldn't play with her. Really!!!!!! You let my kid call me at work for this???? You couldn't re direct her????
I told DD I was working and that she could call me if she was hurt/sick, but otherwise, I needed. to work. SHe understood.
I am totally turned off now and am seriously thinking about asking for a refund for summer.
WHat do you think?

Re: I am really upset with the Huntington YMCA. What would you do?
I would absolutely get your money back. All this disorganization is WAY too much for a working family. When I send my kids out, I want to know they are safe and the place is reliable. Theres way too much room for nonsense. Right now its just 1 week, imagine having to spend the whole entire summer feeling like you do now. For all those expenses you named above, I am sure you can find better.

Wow that is horrible. Places that take care of children should be a little more sensitive to working parents. It is hard enough to find good care when the kids are off from school but you should not have to deal with this.

Re: I am really upset with the Huntington YMCA. What would you do?
I'm not a fan of the YMCA. I went there as a kid. I sent my kids there. I love the swimming program but over the years the problems with the counselors have ranged to the one that stole her pudding to the lack of supervision almost killing my daughter(no exaggeration). At the time I didn't post the name of the camp because my kids were still going there.
For my kids, the before program & after program were actually better than the camp itself.
If you are truly unhappy, I'd tell you want a refund. But I'd tell them soon because the longer you wait, the less you'll get back.
In the meantime, I'm looking into a lot of other ones in the area.

I would pull her out!! She isn't happy, the counselors are idiots and they can't give you straight answers?!?! That's not acceptable for working parents!!
Going back to your post from the other day, If the Northport camps r us is run the same as the hicksville one (which I'm sure it is) she will have a TON of fun. My DD always did!! Definitely look into it.

I would pull her out. Seems these camps are basically run by kids who don't have the experience needed.

I would pull her out and talk to the director face to face and explain why. If you pull her and on't say anything, it won't change for the next person.

Re: I am really upset with the Huntington YMCA. What would you do?
Wow - Cailen has been going to that Y since September, and I love it!!! He is in the 4's program, but I don;t have him in anything other than the school program. I hear they are disorganized at times, and when I called them last year to get info I never heard back, so I had to physically go i and demand that I get information (and got Cailen in even though they were "full") But overall, I LOVE his experience there!!!

The pre-school program is very different than the daycamp.
While I think it's good in theory, my biggest concern is the inexperienced staff. Anytime you have teen counselors, you're going to run into that lack of experience.

That's not true...The Y interviews, hires and trains all individuals (counselors, specialists, etc.) and it's very much run by the YMCA of LI. All branches are connected and run pretty much the same way. There has been some internal re-orgnization as of late at that branch, which may account for some of the issues.
