I am upset and really growing worried about DS
I have posted about this issue a while back but it has grown much worse. DS is close to 11 months and he HATES to eat. I don't just mean he is a picky eater, he will barely eat anything these days. He still likes his bottles (and won't hold them--although we use glass) but he used to not only like stage 3 foods and we were worried about that. Now he has begun to push away, turn his head and scream at the sight of the spoon, regardless of what type of food it is- baby food from a jar, homemade food, finger food, it doesn't matter. He will only eat stage 2 food and barely, from day to day it semes like he will like one food and then hate it the next time....we dotry new foods and severa ltimes as I know it take a while to get used to the flavor but he seems to hate everything. When I give him finger food he will correctly pick it up but it is like he is sucking on it and then spits it out, he never actually chews and swallows it. When we last went to pediatrician he had went down in weight and we discussed the eating issue then which was not as bad then but pediatrician said he would not really worry, it was just getting him used to stage 3 and we would revisit the issue at his 12 month appointment. This was a new doctor as my old doc left the practice and he just said keep trying, well easier said than done. I didn't really like him and am thinkngi about switcing doctors but that's an entire different story. Today my son is getting skinnier, I can tell, his clothes are big and everyone I talk to include family memebers is starting to tell me they have never heard of a baby acting like this towards food. Then one of my family members continues on and on about how her children were completely on table food---that seems light years away for us right now....I have been searching the internet--not always a smart move and turn up everything from he will grow out of it, nothing to worry about to it being foreshadowing of a serious delay.....I am really worried and not really sure how to make it better.....any advice, thoguhts would be appreciated...in all other ways DS seems wel ladjusted, well he does hate baths as well but he is babbling, says about 3-4 words, loves being around people and kids, is hitting all milestones, cruising, sitting up, actually almost walking....I am at a loss!!!

I don't know anything about this, but could he have a texture issue? I forget what it is called, but heard that some children have issues with textures and are very sensitive to things, including food.
Sorry, I can't be of more help, but want to offer you

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
i always hear about the texture thing too, im hopeful thats what it is for you...my bffs dd is 9 10 months old and has very similar issues, she only wants to BF..my friend is still BFing 10-12 times a day!! Little by little shes trying new things but really totally uninterested, her dr says the same thing though, not to worry..they will revisit it.. i know theyre not your kids mother, so its easy for them to say...im sure nothing serious is wrong with your DC but heres some hugs cause i know it feels crappy to think somethings not right with your kid keep your head up, itll get easier!!

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
I agree with the PPs...it really sounds like a possible sensory (texture) issue...I would make another appt. with your pediatrician sooner than the 12 month mark if it concerns you...
Find out from them (or maybe someone on the board knows) who you can contact to explore the possibility of sensory issues further.
Maybe, in the meantime, you can try and give him those milkshake type things to supplement the nutrition in his diet (is it pediasure)...

Im so sorry your upset.... Arent babies under a year supposed to get the majority of their calories from breast milk or formula! I think the whole pushing "Table food" on babies started because formula was so expensive and they want babies off it as much as possible. people even push table food on my 7 month old... it makes me so mad!!! Dont think because everyone else eats real food your ds has to! Maybe hes not ready. Id also check in with you dr asap if you think hes losing weight!

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
It could be a texture issue (NYU has a great food issues team for children) but, it could be his teeth. My ds who loves to eat, has been on a hunger strike for the last 2 weeks or so. Finally, on Monday night I saw 3 teeth coming in.
Can you supplement with formula?

If your mommy's instinct is telling you there is something wrong, then follow your gut and take your DS back to the doctor and demand an evaluation.

That's exactly it, I just feel like something isn't quite right and it's not just going to pass, although I tend to overly worry about things so not sure and don't want to push to make something into more than it may be, if that makes any sense.....this is what is so frustrating, as a PP said, it could jsut be his teeth, he got two teeth months ago and then nothing and now it seems like they are al lcoming at the same time, his entire mouth looks swollen..I just don't know....
Thanks to all those that have replied, I think I am going to call the doctor today, I don't know if I will get any different response this time but I don't want to wait until our next appointment...I feel like I am failing him though right now and am getting depressed over it myself..I need to do something.

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
You are not failiing him. If anything, you are taking action. You think there is something wrong & you're doing something about it.
While I agree it does sound like a texture issue, a growth spurt or when they start to walk & become active makes them skinnier. Don't be hard on yourself. You are going with your instincts. Be proud that you're advocating for him at such an early age.
Our friend's son had eating issues. He was evaluated for sensory problems too. They had him drinking Ensure for the longest time. Now he's picky with food, but eats.

my dd started table food early. it was not due to the cost of formula but moreso upon the recomendation of my doctor. She began table food at around 9 months or so

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
Your concerns are very real and something that I think you should push back on with your doctor...make him hear your concerns...at the very best things are okay and they can explain that to you.
I have read about other moms here going through similar situations with their children...so please know that you are not alone. I also believe that there are specialists out there that can help with eating issues. As pps have mentioned...it could be sensory.
All of our children progress differently...and even those that seem to be doing things with the majority..you'll find it's still a range of time from child to child. At my son's 1st birthday he was eating what everyone else was eating...just smaller pieces. Doesn't mean that is the norm at all...just what he was doing.
It sounds to me that it's more than a taste issue for your son...the crying when he sees the spoon...definitely push your doctor until he gives you a comprehensive answer or guides you to further action.

Not sure where you get this idea from but my DS is 10 months and on table food, but it had nothing to do with $$$. I still spend a small fortune on formula as he drinks 30oz a day. We are on table food because DS started rejecting all baby food, but loves texture and to chew. He started table food at 8 months but would have probably started earlier if I let him. Every baby is different
Anyway to answer the OP, I would talk to the dr. I have a friend whose DS did have the texture sensory issue and needed some therapy but did get past it. But it may not be that serious, my niece at some point started rejecting all foods that came from a spoon…you sometimes never know what is in their little heads. But this is obviously an issue that is affecting his growth and something that you don’t want to just ignore so I would call the ped to talk it through.,

Re: I am upset and really growing worried about DS
mine was a horrible eater till he was weaned off of BM.
before 1, he may have eaten 1 meal ever 3 days.
we never concentrated on jarred food, it was a loss cause.
he ate strawberries, peas, beans, melon.

I had table food pushed on my son as well. I waited until 8 months before introducing it. I wish I had listened because after a certain point they develop gagging issues. It all worked itself out now that he's 7 years old but from 8-12 months old, I cringed everytime he gagged on food. He couldn't get used to texture for the longest time.
