I did speed work with Northport Running Club last night

And I'm in love Chat Icon

What an amazing, welcoming group of people.

It was a lot of fun, believe it or not. I was expecting to be in misery, and embarassed at how slow I am, but it was such an uplifting experience.

Everyone was really helpful and encouraging. There was this old guy there - in his 70's - maybe late 70's... who latched onto me and paced me...

Yes, I had to work hard at keeping up with a guy pushing 80 Chat Icon

One woman commented on how slow she was. She used me as the frame of reference, saying "Well, I'm REALLY slow.... I'm even slower than YOU!" Chat Icon

Despite the fact that I'm a snail, I loved it.

Tuesdays at 6:30 at Northport HS track. I am going to join the club next week Chat Icon

Well, they give you goals to run around the track in a certain time - 1 and a half lap should take 2:55-2:20, and 1 time around the track should be 1:40-88

I personally did closer to 3 minutes for the lap and a half until the old guy subtly sidled next to me and paced me. Then I sped up.... for the one lap around, he kept me at around 1:40, but a few times I fell behind.

According to my garmin, at my fastest I was doing a 6.30-7 min mile. Nothing that insane. And it was for a very short distance. I couldn't keep it up for that long.

I actually started slowing down to around that pace, but the old dude kept pushing me. I think i averaged for the most part at 8.30... Really - you can do it!

The reason why I am the slowest right now, is because I am new. They all have been doing this training and getting faster as a result. If I let the fact that I couldn't do something hold me back, I would NEVER do anything Chat Icon I am the queen of mediocrity. But I believe in doing something to push me out of my comfort zone!!!!

Come do it with me next week!!!! I'll be there! Chat Icon

glad you like it. Once you join they have a FB page too. I can't wait to get back. In the winter they move them to St Anthony's indoor track.

Are you ready for the hill workouts now?

I went to HS with the president (although h was 3 years older)...he is exactly the same.

Congrats Liza - those are great times!

For people who say they could never run that fast - YES - you definitely can. This is speed work. It is not like you are running an entire mile - you are just running one lap - it is a sprint - you will be going faster than 11 minutes per mile and you will see that you will get faster with time.

So true! For the ladies who said they run between a 9 and 11 minute mile, I run between a 9 and a 10 and I can bust out 7 minute mile pace for a couple of minutes. It is doable!!!

Yeah, true. I mostly do my training on the treadmill so I know it's not the same. I set my speed normally around 6.5 mph, however if I'm doing speedwork I will do sprints on there around 8.5 mph & be able to maintain it for 2 minutes, then I slow back down to my regular jogging pace or walk if I have to. Doing this over & over has definitely helped me get faster & has improved my endurance & fitness in general. Even though it's so exhausting!Chat Icon
