I don't know what to do about the holidays this year...(LONG)
My extended family lives out in Suffolk county. I grew up in Miller Place, but my parents sold their house two years ago and live in Manhattan now. DH and I have always made the trek to Long Island for every holiday for the three years that we have lived on Staten Island.
Normally, we kind of complain about the drive, but we do it because we love my family. But this year, DH is working on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. He works an 8am-4pm shift. My aunt is having Thanksgiving dinner in Brookhaven starting at 2pm, so it doesn't really make sense for me to drive all the way out there since my husband will be off work two hours later. It also doesn't make sense for him to drive out AFTER he gets off work because he wouldn't get there til 6:30pm-7pm and everyone would be getting ready to leave.
Christmas doesn't present such a problem because DH and I will go to my parent's house in the city for dinner on Christmas Eve and then I will just stay home til DH gets home on Christmas Day and then we will see SMIL and DH's siblings.
I am also pregnant and we would like to have a holiday here at our house next year when the baby is here (which is also why my husband doesn't want to switch to not work on this year's holidays). But what do I do? No one seems to understand WHY I don't want to leave my husband alone on a holiday (he doesn't really have any family except SMIL and she is going away), but I am bummed that I will be by myself for most of the day too. Blah. I just don't know what to do.

sounds like you have it figured out, it's just letting everyone know that is bothering you. You wanna spend the holiday with DH and that is fine...
You guys will have a fun day...and hey, sleep in now cuz next year you won't have the luxury think of it as a christmas present from your unborn child

One year we spent Thansgiving by ourselves because there was Dh's family was away and my family lives far away. It was so nice. We loved it! We made a great dinner of stuff that we love and had a nice relaxing day.
I understand you don't want to be alone, but you could just relax, watch some chick flix, start dinner going so it's ready when DH gets home (unless you don't cook - then get something catered.) Brookhaven is so far for you and I agree that I wouldn't leave DH alone. And the timing doesn't work. It sounds like if you went to Brookhaven, then you wouldn't make it home in time for DH.

If you truly don't want to spend the day alone, you could drive to Brookhaven on your own and leave in time for you to celebrate with your DH (bringing him leftovers).

While your home alone waiting for DH, do something that you don't normally get to do.....relax, read a book, work on a craft. Kind of forget it's a holiday. My S/O works 365 days a year (Mon - Sat until 7pm, Sun/Holidays until 5pm). One Christmas I found myself alone most of the day, I watched movies, cooked and cross stitiched all day.....I was very happy when he got home and we had a great night.
