I feel like I'm doing something wrong with tummy time - please help!
Looking at the pics of Chelle's gorgeous Lola, I've come to realize that I must be doing somethng wrong.
James has awesome head and neck control, he is no longer a bobble head - he's super sturdy. When I put him on the Boppy or belly down on the activity mat, he just kind of goes flat, if that makes sense. He doesn't push himself up. I position his arms underneath his chest like he's leaning on his elbows, but they end up slipping out and he lands face first again.
What exactly shoudl I be doing to ensure that he start to push himself up? He's 3 months old already, shouldn't he be doing this?

That's totally normal. Mason hated tummy time until he rolled over on his own. Now he only likes to be on his tummy. I used to think i was doing something wrong too b/c the Ped said to put him on his belly for 10 mins a few times a day. I felt those 10 mins were WAY too long b/c he'd start to fuss after 1 min. I just did a few mins here and there. LIke I said b4... now he'll roll over as soon as I put him on his back and hold his head up (just like in the holiday card you got)

He doesn't hate it at all, he giggles and smiles throughout the whole time he's on his belly - it's just more that he has NO motivation to push himself up. he's perfectly content laying face down on the activity mat with his face smushed into it. Crazy kid.
Love the card, by the way! (forgot to tell you when we spoke the other day)

You're not doing anything wrong!!!
Trust me...it isn't always like that. She usually colapses after a few minutes.
I do A LOT of her tummy time on my chest... Having her be able to see my face really encourages her to look somewhere. I sing her songs and we babble back and forth so she stays focused and before you know it she's been looking for a good 5 minutes or more.

My DS does the same thing. He hates tummy time he will not even last a minute. I hope it will be better when he starts to roll over. He will be 3 months on Sat. Hopefully he will roll over soon

J&M weren't fans of tummy time, I found the tummy mat was such a waste. I gave them "tummy time" by letting them lay face down on my chest, or sitting up with me supporting them. those kinds of activities build the same muscles as traditional "tummy time."

Ok - talk to me like I'm 3 years old . When you say "sitting up with me supporting them", do you mean like having him sit on my lap and just holding his hands so he's sitting upright? What about somethng like the Bumbo seat?
Is it ok developmentally that he's not pushing himself up yet?

Exactly. Just have him sit in your lap and hold him in a sitting position, with your hands under his armpits or around his chest. He may be a little young for the bumbo still. I don't think my DC really started pushing up until 4 or 5 months.
I worried too that I wasn't doing enough tummy time, but they rolled over, sat up, crawled, etc. right on schedule.

DD has excellent neck control, has been in the bumbo since 6 weeks
with that said, she has NO arm strength bc she REFUSES to do tummytime, and wont push herself up as soon as she realizes shes on her tummy she flips out! she starts crying and im so afraid shes going to smash her face into the playmat. ill roll her back over and it takes a few minutes to calm her down.
i wonder if there are other ways to strengthen their arms so they learn to push up? im afraid its going to put her behind in crawling

Great, thank you! We've been doing this with him for a while now. If he holds onto our fingers, he can actually pull himself up from laying down to a sitting position. He actually sits really nicely in the Bumbo since abut 2 weeks ago.

I swear, I thought something was wrong with eddie since it took so long for him to push up and lift his head. He was like 4 months old once he started doing it. I asked the pedi a million times and my friend who is an OC and they both kept telling me, not to worry.

this is DD exactly! HATES HATES HATES has always hated tummy time! I try everyday and it is miserable for both of us. That being said, she is a very strong and sturdy baby at 5 months and can sit up unsupported for a several seconds at a time and sits tripod unassisted all the time. She has not rolled over from belly to back though which I am worried is because she is never ON her belly! She has done back to belly and screams every time she does it. I am going to ask the ped at our next visit if I should be worried about her lack of rolling at this age.
