I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

I posted yesterday how this mother asked me to watch her 6 year old son for her 2-3 days/week depending on the week. She said in her email she would pay $150/week. I thought it sounded good, even though I was hesitant to watch another child on top of Johnny...

Well she just wrote back saying "Oh, actually if you watch him 2-3 days/week thats really 2 full weeks per month and I would pay you $150 for each full week, or $300 a month".

I rejected the "offer" telling her that is not what her email stated, and for 85 hours/week that was about $3.50/hour for childcare. Daycare centers get more than that.

I just feel very mislead. Back to square one with searching...and crossing my fingers my husband get a promotion in June...Chat Icon

Hopefully you'll find something soon! I agree...that is not great pay for watching someone's child.

I would never offer that salary out to someone who would be responsible for my child for 2-3 FULL days/week. It is insulting to me. I didn't expect $15 or even $10/hour...which is what a lot of babysitters get these days. I just expected a fair offer. Oh well.

Don't feel insulted, feel bad for her because she's living in la-la land if she really thinks someone is going to watch a 6 year old for $3-4/hour.

I know, you are right. I didn't even work out the true math. She would have dropped him off at 8:30 am and picked up at 5:30pm. 90 hours a month for $300....comes to (let me grab my calculator...)

$3.30. Good lord. She is on crack..

I would have felt insulted too! She's never going to find anybody to watch her child if she honestly thinks she can find somebody for that rate! Maybe once she actually sits and thinks about it, she'll be coming back to you!

Re: I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

I guess I'm weird..I don't know that I would be insulted by it, but annoyed that she wasn't up front about the pay. I'm all for mom's helping other mom's, so I personally would've done if if I didn't have anything else to do with my time off. Especially if I had a child close to the same age so they could play together. It's not like the child is an infant. 6 Year olds are pretty self sufficient.

You would be surprised as to what people charge to babysit in other parts of the country. This topic comes up A LOT on another board I frequent, and a lot of people earn about $3-5 per hour to watch babies!

Re: I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

Just realized my in home day care person charges $50 a day for part time- which is 150 a week. And she is very inexpensive- most charge $70.

Daycare "centers" in my area charge roughly $55 for full time.

Well the thing is is that I DO have lots to do with my limited time...to me, a 6 year old on top of my 9 month old is a lot of juggling and work even if a 6 year old is pretty self sufficient. It has nothing to do with moms not helping other moms...I do plenty of "helping" but this would be a JOB. And $3.30/hour, to me, is a HUGE insult. I'm sorry, but other parts of the country too prob have lower cost of living.

<shrug> Well, if I had limited time, I wouldn't take on a babysitting job for someone else's child to begin with regardless of what the pay is.

If I had nothing else to do but be home with my child anyway, *I* would certainly do it to "help" someone else out (regardless of if it's a job or not). If it was a *permanent* thing, I wouldn't do it, but I gathered from your OP that it was just for a few weeks during the Summer.

I'm simply expressing what *I* would do in a situation like this, not telling you what *you* should do because it really makes no difference to me what you do ;)

I understand what you would do...but I don't think you are putting yourself in my position. I need extra money...I was making $900 before getting laid off. Watching another child is a big responsibiility.

When you said this:

"Well, if I had limited time, I wouldn't take on a babysitting job for someone else's child to begin with regardless of what the pay is" you sound insulting and I don't appreciate it.

My time is precious to me, just like any other mom. Am i ABLE to watch another child? Yes. But am I able to watch another child which is time consuming and have no money in the end to show for it? NO.

And yes, it is a summer thing...and I am ALWAYS ready adn able to help people, I babysit all the time here and there and ask nothing in return for moms in my mothers group, and for friends.

BUT like i stated this is something where I need the income, like we all do....I will be doing something else instead of this obviously to contribute to my family. I do not have a choice right now.

And i'm glad it makes no difference to you what i do...I appreciate that. In the future, please do not reply to my posts if I am clearly upset at a situation that I have every right to be upset at. I didn't ask whether I have a right to be or not, I stated that I AM and everyone else seems to agree that it is insulting.

I'm sorry if you thought I was insulting you, that wasn't my intention. Chat Icon

So now I'm offering a suggestion Chat Icon You could create a post on Craigs List that you are willing to care for a child in your home during the Summer and I bet you will get a lot of responses since people are always looking for care in the Summer and it would surely be more money.

Re: I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

So she really wanted to pay you $75 per "half" week thinking this is a total of 2 "full" week per month.

Yet, you are stucked 2-3 days per week, every week, with a child with you full days for $25 per day.

Nice!!!

I hope she can find the same deal somewhere else.

You are better off mowing your neighbor's grass at this price.

Re: I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

good lord maureen that woman is on crack! for a grown adult to watch a child for $3.30 an hour IS INSULTING!!! i used to get $8 an hour babysitting in college...which was 10 years ago!

a 6 year old is a big responsibility. you would probably also be feeding the child, which would take up some of that payment.

like some people say, "you get what you pay for". if she thinks her child is worth $3.30, then what type of care is she expecting??

BTW...i'm so sorry about your job! i know how much it meant to you Chat Icon

Thank you for that....I appreciate it. And I am sorry for coming off super defensive, but I did feel attacked because it is always my nature to help ANYONE, but my situation is one right now where money is definitely an issue...and childcare, as we all know, SHOULD be a position that is well paid or decently paid...so $3.30/hr when I originally thought we agreed on $150/wk just hurt.

I am also out of sorts...it comes at a time where my extra income was really helping us. Being a SAHM means everything to me, and i just have this nagging feeling that nothing is going right...again, sorry i attacked you, i was feeling very very down.

I get a discount with my job and I just figured out for 42.5 hours a week, I pay about $4.35. Still more than she was willing to pay!

Re: I feel so insulted (update regarding watching the 6 year old)

bottom line is..people pay more per hour to have a mechanic work on their car then to watch their most precious commodity.
I never bargained the labor with the mechanic..but people chew u down on the price of watching their kid.

U have every right to be ******...shes taking advantage.
