I feel very fat!

I'm only 11w6d, but my clothes are tight. My doctor told me to walk for exercise when I asked about exercise, something that's been tough to do on a cold rainy day like today and other nights I come home and crash I'm so tired these days. I'm usually a size 4. I'm probably about a 5 right now. I know this isn't the time to try to lose any weight, but did anyone else gain 3 or 4 pounds this early on. I'm a bit depressed about it. From what I read on this board, I should be gaining the 3 or 4 pounds in another 8 or 9 weeks, I don't want to have a million pounds to lose after the baby is born, I wanted to keep weight gain to the minimum required for a healthy baby. I'm eating bran to keep my body regular so I know it's not constipation. My DH just tells me "honey you are pregnant and even though it's early your body is changing". I think he's just being nice. Thoughts?

Re: I feel very fat!

My sister was a size 4 pre baby and she said she was a size 8 by week 10! I say every day that I feel HUGE!! I started out heavy..so I'm paranoid I'm going to be OBESE! Your body just changes and sometimes you can't do anything to prevent it! i gained 4 pounds so far(I went to Dr. yesterday) and he said that was perfectly normal! Just make sure you are getting good nutrients for the baby...and worry about weight watchers after!

Re: I feel very fat!

By the time I was 11w6d I was already in maternity pants. I gained weight early on and it leveled off as time passed, so that now at 33w3d my overall total gain is perfect.

I gained alot pretty quickly also but from what everyone says it's ok. I gained 6 pounds at 9 weeks...12 pounds at 13 weeks and 17 pounds at 17 weeks. I was a little concerned at first but now i'm just going with the flow.

Re: I feel very fat!

At 11 weeks I felt very uncomfortable in my clothes. I hadn't gained lbs, I had pretty bad MS, but I definately was not fitting in my pants and most of my tops.

Smaller girls like yourself usually gain a little more than bigger girls because your body NEEDS the extra fat to nourish the baby.

Try gradually getting into an excercise routine. I stopped working out during MS but I got right back on the elyptical when I felt better. It really helps to keep a work out routine while pregnant, because you will lose the weight that much faster after the baby.

Don't stress about it. Chat Icon

Re: I feel very fat!

I think alot of us have had similar feelings....but gaining weight is all a part of this process and we have to remember everyone is different. one thing i did for myself is not weigh myself at home, if the dr thinks i have gained too much or too little, they will tell me. Its okay that you gained early on Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm only 8 weeks tomorrow and I feel so heavy. I'm usually a size 5/6 but my 7/8's feels tight on me already Chat Icon

My doctor doesn't really want me exercising in the first trimester. I have a treadmill so I may just start walking on it at a slow pace.

Re: I feel very fat!

If i were you I would just try to relax. In my first 12 weeks I would go up and down (but that had to do with M/S) However even though I only gained 1 lb by the end of those 12 weeks, none of my clothes fit. I am usually a 6 or 8 and I was wearing size 10 pants.
Your DH is right your body is changing and even though you havent gained a lot things are shifting and clothes just wont fit the same.
FYI - I have more than one friend who gained 10 lbs in their first trimester. Every body and every pregnancy is different.

Re: I feel very fat!

I'm 9w6d and as of last week, I had barely gained a pound. Yet, all of my pants are tight! You're body just starts changing. It's totally normal. It's also normal to be upset about it. I just stare at my closet some mornings and try not to cry!
I had been exercising (elliptical and machines at the gym) but I have a cold so I haven't been doing anything lately. My mom got me a Fit Mama DVD and an exercise ball for my birthday and I can't wait to try them out. Maybe you could get a DVD like that for days that you can't walk outside?

Re: I feel very fat!

I was a size 4 before and QUICKLY gained weight. I was up 7-8lbs by 11-12wks! I am now 18wks and up 15lbs. I think some people just are more prone to putting on the pounds. I can't say I'm eating 100% nutritious food (what's the point of being pg if you can't indulge once in a while Chat Icon ) but I haven't been eating like a slob. So, there's not much that can be done. I would NOT worry about 3-4lbs at this point - just stay healthy and don't worry about it! Chat Icon

Re: I feel very fat!

I know exactly how you feel but I wouldn't stress out about it. I'm 14 weeks today and have gained maybe 1-2 pounds at the most. My DH tells me I look huge, which is always a comforting thing to hear.Chat Icon

A lot of it has to do with your body adjusting to the hormones, the prenatals, the MS, and pregancy in general.

I don't fit into any of my clothes, but I think for my most of it is gas and bloating. (I know, lovely, right?) I haven't been able to close any of my pants since probably around 7 weeks. Don't be so hard on yourself. I think once you find more comfortable and flattering clothes you will feel better.

Just remember, you ARE pregnant. You're supposed to get bigger. It's just frustrating to be in that in between stage where you just look fat to everyone else.

I found that once I told people I was pg, I let myself dress a little looser and didn't care since they knew it was the PG and not just me packing on pounds.

As long as your doctor is okay with your weight, you should be too.

Re: I feel very fat!

I very much appreciate hearing that I'm "normal". I was talking to my best friend today and told her how I was feeling - she said she went through it too... pre-babies she and I wore the same size, she said she bought a few size 5/6 in the beginning before buying maternity clothes, but she gave me some tips on all that. I was telling her too that my hips had been feeling "strange" (I really can't describe it - was like a little "growing pain" here and there) a few weeks ago... since then I can barely wear my suit pants. I decided since suits are so expensive and I just dropped about $1k last spring for new suits for my sales job, I think since I'll be PG in the winter months, I'll get some slacks and sweaters and a big coat. It's just too expensive to keep buying clothes.

I too have had sinus trouble and colds... when I asked the doc about exercise he told me to go for walks but I also bought a DVD called The Perfect Pregnancy Workout. Now that I'm 12 weeks and my sinus trouble has subsided a bit, I'm going to try it out this weekend, but not push myself too much. I hate paying $50 for gym membership when I'm only allowed to walk on a treadmill per my doctor and they don't have any prenatal fitness classes or anything like that! At $50 per month I can own a treadmill in a year! Gyms should have special rates for people who can't take advantage of ALL of their immenities. I mean, don't think I'll be in that jaccuzi any time soon people!
