Don't send them a dime. Contact the Attorney General's office & your town clerk to see what can be done.

I got taken - I can't believe it- STAR related
Wow.. so sorry this happened to you.
I remember getting something like this ... very assertive and professional like they were doing me a service. I ignored them. I filed everything myself. In my mind NOTHING done through another party can not be done MYSELF (with exceptions of course and those times I can shop the middle man).
I get the deed thing STILL and I've had my house 4 years now! LOL
But you said they'd take installments AND knock $60off? Geez how expensive was this thing?

I got one of the letters about my deed too, which didn't make sense since we already had one in posession. I just threw it out. Sorry this happened to you.

Re: I got taken - I can't believe it- STAR related
I almost wonder if you can't get help any other way if you should just wait for them to take you to small claims. Then you would have to go before a mediator (at least in Nassau, where I assume you are) and the mediator would try to make them settle for less than the full value. I also don't think a judge would be in a hurry to award them the full value of the STAR.... GL!

I agree that you shouldn't take action, but, you signed a contract... deception or not, you signed and agreed to the terms.

If the Attorney General is investigating a fraud case, I'm not sure how the contract would apply.

Sorry, I'm confused by these statements. Any clarification? I know we signed the contract, big mistake, my point is that it is clearly their intent to deceive and make it seem as they they are from the county! I really want other people to be aware of this scam - and the deed scam - so they can avoid it. I think there are a lot of people worse off than me and my husband in Nassau County and yes, it's going to suck forking over the $1K, but there might be some people who CAN'T. And then what? I could really see how they target new homeowners (eager young families trying to do the right thing applying for STAR) and even seniors who might not be that savvy.

Re: I got taken - I can't believe it- STAR related
->I would look at the contract you signed. Look for the small print about cancelling the contract.
->Contact the Attorney General's office:
To contact our office by phone, please call one of our hotlines:
General Helpline: 1-800-771-7755
and explain the situation to see if they would investigate.
-> Contact the Town to verify that you are listed as having a Star Exemption. Explain to the Town clerk the situation & ask what you need to do to ensure they don't get the money sent directly to them.
->Then I would write a letter/email to the company stating that you mistakenly believed that they were a government entity, not a business. Follow the instructions to cancel the contract (with the exception of ANY payment). I would cc the Attorney General's office along with any other governing agency on fraud or business complaints.
Then anytime I was contacted by them or a collection agency, I'd send them copies of my letters cancelling the contract & the info on fraud investigations.

Thanks for taking the time to send such a thoughtful response. The fine print on the contract says you can cancel within 5 days of signing and returning. Please keep in mind, we returned in August 2012, over a year ago, and now that we did get our STAR deduction, they are in touch to collect. It's f'ed up.

I would contact the attorney general. I would also let them know you are contacting them because you believe you have been a victim of fraud.
Then get a lawyer.

I wouldn't send them a dime. I would contact the US General Attorney office and put a complaint. If they keep contacting you for the money tell them that your lawyer will contact them. I hate that shady companies like this exist. UGH. So sorry!

Re: I got taken - I can't believe it- STAR related
So sorry you are going through this!! We just closed on our home last month and the STAR exemption is on my list of things to do. I bet in my pile is a solicitation letter like the one you got! Thanks for bringing attention to this. I will be on the lookout! Hope this is resolved quickly and in your favor.

I got taken - I can't believe it- STAR related
BTW THANK YOU for sharing your experience. I need to make sure to tell my mom later. My dad passed away recently and she has been quite overwhelmed dealing with all the assorted financial/legal things because he used to handle all of that. I can see her or someone like her looking at this and thinking, hey this might be helpful, without looking at the small print.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Contact your Congressman's office and also NY State Attorney General's office. The state website has a form you can fill out for complaints. Both need to know about this sort of scam. While you are at it, contact Channel 12 and any city channel you watch and tell them the story. They might want to air it as it is a scam targeting lots of people. Newsday is another, plus any local paper.
It could be the company might let you out of this if it starts getting bad publicity.

I think this statement is wrong. If it was deception, then it was fraud. A complaint ought to be filed with the state Attorney General immediately. Call your congessman and Assembly person also. In my experience, they are often helpful and want to know about such frauds.
