Tim Hardaway is gay .......

... or rather, he .. "hates gay people". Who SAYS that?

Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway said Wednesday that he hates gay people, but later said he regretted the remarks.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people," he said while a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. "I'm homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

The discussion was sparked by last week's announcement that retired NBA center John Amaechi is gay.

The host asked Hardaway how he would interact with a gay teammate.

"First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room."

If he did find out that a teammate was gay, Hardaway said he would ask for the player to be removed from the team.

"Something has to give," Hardaway said. "If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that's upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court or whatever, it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate."

How would he like it if someone said, "I hate African Americans."?

Doesn't he realize that just like people are born into a race, they are born with their sexual orientation? You would think someone who grew up as a minority would have more empathy towards someone of another minority.

Oh, and as to the above comment... what is it about homophobic people thinking that just because someone is gay they must be checking them out?

Most U.S. born NBA players are handed a full athletic scholorship paying for tuition, room, board, books and stipend. A large percentage of these kids do receive college degrees and a chance to market their education after their college basketball career is over.

It's the huge number of those college players that are handed multi-million dollar contracts that squander their good fortune with their attitude of entitlement. Back in 1997, all star guard Tim Hardaway was pulled over driving his Ferrari 110 miles per hour in a 40 MPH zone. Hardaway first accused the police officer of racial profiling and then threatened the officers life saying "I have friends that will take you out." Tim...did you forget the fact that you were driving TWICE the legal speed limit?

I think that is particularly interesting b/c he “hates them so much” yet he probably interacts with men and women who are gay everyday of his life—and maybe he already has a teammate who is gay and he doesn’t even know it!—but that is the part that I find almost humorous… He is so ignorant and hateful but he probably has friends, relatives, etc who are gay and he has NO idea yet interacts with them and likes them as people. Amazing and disgusting all at the same time!

they won't do anything

technically, they really can't because he's expressing his right to free speech

they only thing the PR dept can do is tell him to issue an apology, which I think he did.

They'll probably also do some fundraising activities with him and showcase it to the media to improve his image

The team may also make a donation to a gay rights foundation to improve their image.

It will be reputation protection, but he won't be penalized

I just wonder why anyone, regardless of their fears, beliefs, etc would choose to excercise their right to free speech at the expense of alienating fans. I mean, in addition to being just plain ignorant, it is not good business. They get paid a TON of money and that salary is based on the revenue from fans. Just not clever IMO.

its probably because he's gay himself and doesnt know how to deal with his feelings ...

i will never understand how people can throw around the word "hate". how can you hate someone or something that you dont know?
