I hate this part

I became a supervisor of a team of 8 last year. I LOVE being a supervisor, and have gotten a lot of positive feedback.

But this is, by far, the worst month on the job. I have to complete all my performance reviews for my team by Oct. 31. I finished them up and distributed them last night, and will have my one-on-one meetings next week with each team member.

I hate this part. I can sense a lot of unhappiness, particularly because the last supervisor was SO lax and never held anyone accountable for ANYTHING, which is part of the reason why he left. I'm not lax, I'm very firm, but I DO consider myself fair.

I toiled for days and days about these reviews; I spent two entire weekends drafting them up, revising them, really thinking hard about who deserved what, and who performed the best, and who performed the worst.

I know some of my team members expected higher ratings, and while I really do personally like most of the people on my team, I felt that I really had to recognize my best performers and not diminish their outstanding performance by rating other solid performers higher than they deserve Chat Icon

So, I came in this morning and I hear a LOT of whispering, and some not-so-happy glances coming my way from my team members.

Ugh. I have an ulcer.

Guess I won't be sleeping for the next few weeks either Chat Icon

UPDATE - UGH. Just received one written complaint and one request for official time to draft a response to his rating. And I know for certain another team member will be filing a grievance against me Chat Icon

This is why some people have no desire to be in a supervisory position.

Sorry you are going through this. TBH, I can't and this is totally why I left a supervisory role and will never take one again.

I already have enough drama at work.........Chat Icon

Re: I hate this part

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

My advice to you is to think this way. Your job is not to be everyone's friend. This is a tough economy and businesses all over want to attract and retain the best employees. Those that rise to the occasion will get the best out of their jobs..you can't phone it in anymore.

If they want to complain, that's fine. You were chosen to supervise where there was limited supervision and structure.

There is a new sheriff in town and this is how it is.

If they don't like it, they can find their happiness somewhere else.

It is in their best interest to want to peform at the top of their game. They also need to realize that there is a game here and they need to play it.

This is the real world. They haven't lived in it apparently until now.

If you have the backing of your supervisors then I feel you should feel comfortable with your decisions. They gave you the job for a reason..your objectivity, compassion, skills and experience.

I hope you don't lose sleep over this.

Good luck.

Well I think when you have your one on one meetings you'll be able to discuss every thing. Good luck.

Good post. While I don't always agree with my supervisor (who actually took over when I stepped down as supervisor) he is always very fair.

There are a couple of people who complain about him CONSTANTLY though and honestly, it boils down to the fact that they really are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, or the job in general to the best of their ability. I also think it's quite rare for most people to take criticism in general.

I've been there.

I've explained to staff members that when you come in & do your job, you are meeting expectations. When you go above & beyond, you are exceeding expectations.

I'm always amazed at how people are shocked over their reviews. Giving continual feedback as to their performance is key - and it sounds like your staff is aware of how well (or poorly) they are performing - hence, the anxiety.

Not sure how the grievances work in goverment but here, we do look at them to see if they carry weight & often find they don't.

Hang in there. It's Friday.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I hate this part

We are completing our own self evals today and I have to eval my boss..(that's new for this year)

I never get a formal review but I get feedback all through the year. It's hard to take criticism..I'm always happy to have things explained to me constructively.

Confrontation is the hardest part of what supervisors do..you are confronting issues and people to make it better. It's not easy.

My boss always says..computers easy...people hard.

Re: I hate this part

My supervisor gives us all the same reviews, meeting expectations. Its not like he takes the time to even consider who's over or under performing. I think it would be nice to get a honest opinion once in a while. He also goes to no effort to give out awards or nominate us for the good work we do. I think everyone in our group would love a supervisor like you, someone that take the time to fill out the reviews.

SORRY..I guess this comes with the territory. in time people will get over it. I guess they're not used to your leadership. If they are angry at their sub par reviews, they only have themselves to blame, but its always much easier to blame everyone else.

Good luck!

This is one of the reasons (of many) I wouldn't want to be a supervisior. Hopefully once you speak to them, they will have a better understanding of where you are coming from.

This is exactly what it boils down to, and I think many misunderstand this concept, which I will have to explain in more detail... thanks Chat Icon

I really hate this situation for you!! Its up to them to ensure that they deliver the work to a high standard, and if they want a better appraisal (if you will) they need to pick up the slack and be accountable for their own performance.

Good luck to you, but imo its their issue they are the ones who write the book!!!

eta...I think if someone IS really interested in doing a good job, any performance review should be constructive criticism and people should take the advice and use it to perform better....anyway...it stinks for you!

Thanks, and I agree Chat Icon I really do try to give constructive feedback every turn.

DH could hear the stress in my voice and carted his little tush to the city to take me to lunch, which was a nice little repreive, but I just got back and a written dispute from the one who is going to file a grievance against me, is sitting on my desk.

I think I"m going to let my food digest before I dare to open and read it!

Re: I hate this part

I'm a supervisor of a staff of 8 and I feel your pain Chat Icon as I am finishing up mine now.

My only comment is that you never want someone to hear something for the first time on a review- if there are issues, the staff member should be spoken to prior to that- nothing should be a surprise

I like the way we do our reviews, I write them, then sit with the employee and we go over them- I think its hard sometimes to get context if they read them without being able to ask questions.

good luck with the meetings Chat Icon

Actually this has been my theme as a new supervisor; the attorney filing a grievance actually filed one last year against his prior supervisor and WON because in our agency, if you give someone one of the lowest ratings, you have to provide documentation demonstrating you made several offers of assistance and the employee's performance still didn't improve. He won the grievance because there wasn't a single iota of documentation from the last supervisor.

Since I've come in, I have continuing conversations with each team member about what they are doing good, and what they can do better, and with my worst performer, I specify exactly how his work doesn't meet successful performance.

I think the problem is that the last supervisor went down in flames, and just before he was booted out, his parting gift to his team members was really lax, good ratings to everyone.

I made it a point not to even LOOK at last year's ratings because I didn't want to be influenced by them or feel restricted to just mirror the past. I am a new supervisor with a different, more firm philosophy on accountability. I think my ratings were fair, but for some people, they vary drastically from last year's rating. I think I just need to explain very clearly to everyone that I didn't look at last year's rating, so no one's performance "fell" in my eyes, and that I'm really just setting the threshold for moving forward under my supervision.

Next week are my one-on-one's to discuss; it ain't going to be pretty, but I'll get through it with some vino and chocolate Chat Icon

Re: I hate this part

Blu-ize's first post summed up what I was going to say perfectly, so I'll just add this.

Being the boss sucks, being a female boss probably doesn't help sometimes either (and it is terrible to even type this). I still struggle with it today, after 8 years as a supervisor to staffs as large as 20 and as small as 1.

But you seem to have a good system in place. You are doing what is asked of you. The thing that separates you from bad supervisors is that you actually have taken the time to constructively review your employess. Some people are harsh without reserve and others, like the old supervisor, do nothing,

Kudos to you Chat Icon And good luck...I see a big jug of wine in your future.
