Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
I can't put my finger on why at the moment. But I defintie;y believe in hate crime legislation. After being a part of a production of The Laramie Project, it put me right in the middle of this whole subject for months, and in really emotional ways it put me right in the middle of the situation, and it just terrifies me that someone can be beaten up for who they like to sleep with, or the color of their skin. I think as a society we need to show that htere is no tolerance for that sort of thing.

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
i just think there are certain things that are sickening...burning houses, being dragged by a car, gay bashings...those extreme cases i do believe should recieve harsher sentences..
but then couls any car jacking, robbing by a black man be a racial hate crime?

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
It's so hard to say because the "justice" system has so many loopholes that it probably wouldn't matter even if hate crimes did carry a harsher punishment.

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
That's why it's difficult because so muhc crime does happen ebtween races. The current news story, the bosy who were steaing a car. it was most likel a white person's car. Was that racially motivated? Probably not. If I'm walking through a black neighborhood vs a black woman walking through a black nieghborhood, am I more likely to get mugged? probably. Is that a hate crime? I don't know. The black kids walkng around in a white neighborhood were a lot more likely than white kids walking around that enighborhood tog et beat up? Is that a hate crime??
I'm not sure what the official legality is for a hate crime though

i am sorry but i disagree....i think that the fact that they went into a 95% white (as you said) community to steal this car IS IN FACT RACIAL!

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
I think they just went where the nice cars were. You want to find a nice car in Queens you go to Howard Beach. I think if you want to steal something you don't care who you're stealing it from (as in they're not stealing it to somehow harm a white person, but for the monetary gain of stealing a car). And that's different from beating somsone up just because they're black, white, gay, jewish, whatever. But it's possible. That's why it's a fine line. Like I said if I were walking through a black neighborhood and there was a back woman there too, and some guys were out to mug someone, they're probably mug me, because they know I'm an outsider. I'm not sure if that constitutes a hate crime or not.

IT would be racially motivated then, no? I mean if your saying that a black man getting beat up in a predominately white neighborhood is racially motivated ... you being attacked in a predominately black neighborhood would also be racially motivatedtoo? It works BOTH ways.

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
It depends. I think maybe this si where the line is. Is our primary goal to steal something, or is your primary goal to beat someone up for what they are?
I gave those examples particularly because I feel like there is a really thin line.
I think in the mugging example, it wouldn't be a hate cirme because they were out to steal an IPod, not to hurt a white girl. I'm just an easier target. if a white mugger chooses me over a white guy, it's not a hate cirme b/c I'm a woman, I'm just an easier target in his eyes.
I just think it's complicated.

That's my point. It's complicated. It's not at all cut and dry and I'm not sure what makes something a hate crime and what doens't. you could argue that the HB thing wasn't a hate crime. it was just territorial. Those guys knew the blakc guys didn't belong there and tried to protect their "territory" it didn't matter if the guys were black or white.

Re: POLL: Do you think "hate crimes" should carry higher penalties?
IMO a crime is a crime- should someone be penalized Less b/c they raped me jsut for the sake of raping me- rather than b/c i was White? No. hate crimes are disgusting, but so are most crimes. i think it should be specific to the act commited, than race in general

I agree. My point is that a crime like that is just SICK!!!!! and should be punihed accordingly, BUT it shouldnt be punished any Less if it wasnt racially motivated.
