I have a question for those who own their businesses....

I have always wanted to own my own business. But, I don't even know where to begin!

I want to open a children's themed store (think mixture of clothing, toys, books, workshops) in Manhattan...but how do I go about even doing it?

I have a business but i don't have a retail (brick & mortar) location.

I guess you would need to start with the following:

Get a federal tax ID.
Get a state license to collect sales tax.
Get a business license (with NYC i guess)
Look for retail locations (i guess with an agent)
Look for staff to hire
Try to estimate how much sales you will have vs. expenses (like utilities, staff costs, rent, etc.)

The biggest issue with opening a business is finding the money to start it. You typically need to have access to some cash to start. You may be ableto get some business loans if your personal credit is excellent.

It's not easy. But worth it if your business is successful!

Rent in Manhattan isn't cheap. Especially in an area with a lot of foot traffic.
