I have HIGH Cholesterol!
We had a health fair at work and we just got out test results back. My Cholesterol is high....not just a little over, but very high.
I'm at 258!
While I'm not totally surprised b/c I have a very bad family history of it (both parents and sisters have high cholesterol), I'm a bit perplexed as to what to do about.
At 32 yrs. old, they want me to change my diet before putting me on medication.
But I don't eat that poorly to begin with. I eat mostly chicken, brown rice, veggies and plenty of fruit and I excercise regularly. I hardly ever eat eggs, whole milk, ice cream, potato chips, fatty meats, cheeses or butter.
I think in all honesty, I don't have a clue on how to eat healthy. I've never had a weight problem, never had to watch what I ate, and I have no idea what a correct portion size is.
I'm at a loss (and a bit bummed).

Re: I have HIGH Cholesteril!
Eliminate as many animal products. Eat soy products (like soymilk), oatmeal and cheerios..all proven to lower cholesterol. Try to eat more veggies.
Just by doing this my FH lwoered his cholesterol by 50 points in a few months! Good Luck!

Wow! 50 points is a great improvement!! Great for him!!
I'd love to get mine down at least that much in such a short period of time.
I guess I need to be a lot more diligent with my eating (I'm eating oatmeal as I type this ). And I have to introduce myself to soy. Thanks and make sure your FH keeps up the good work!

If you are doing caardiovascular exercise already, then that might not help to lower it. So being more aware of your diet might help and you should try it before opting for medication. Do a search online of foods and cholesterol Shrimp has a lot of cholesterol, some do not realize it.
Remember trans fats can raise cholesterol too.

Thanks. I think I need to do some serious research on the internet. I'm sure there are a lot of things that I eat that I think are healthy for me but aren't.
I guess I should be relieved in some way that I can take preventative steps to get healthier now, instead of having something serious happen to me health-wise down the road.

Re: I have HIGH Cholesteril!
ANY animal product has some cholesterol.
Vegetable products have NO cholesterol. So that's an easy start. SOmetimes just replacing the regular mi;k in your cereal and coffee with soymilk can make a difference, because you're cutting cholesterol AND adding a food that lowers it.

I read where Niacin helps to improve your cholesterol. I just started taking it hoping it helps. I got a Flush Free kind -- apparently regular niacin will make you look flushed for a while.
