I have the opposite of a helicopter parent
I have a boy in my first period class he is self contained for everything but my class. Every day he comes in with nothing and I mean NOTHING. I asked him where his packet and dittos were and he said his mom throws it out. I thought he was joking. I spoke to his case manager from elementary and this poor kid isn't lying. They said he is the middle child and well he's NOT the apple of his parent's eye because he is LD. Poor kid seems really really sweet but is starting to fall in with a bad crowd. Breaks my heart. He needs parents so badly.

Re: I have the opposite of a helicopter parent
how heartbreaking.
is there any way to leave his work at school, maybe he can even focus better at school than at home anyway (to do hw in class, keep a folder in school for all his work). this way he will feel that sense of accomplishment when he sees all his work and the progress he makes over the months.. how sad.

Re: I have the opposite of a helicopter parent
I know and I will work on that. Right now there is so much more that I have to worry about, more details, than I can post on a public forum. The expression that you never know what these kids go home to is so true and sad in this case. I called Mom 2 weeks ago and she has yet to bother calling me back. I left her another message about throwing his stuff out, hopefully the fact that I stated I am calling with the principal and the school psychologist sitting here with me and want to discuss this will stop it (IE building a case). The whole situation is just so so so sad. If I could post all I was told you would be like this
He's one of those kids that I will be going home every day saying a pray that I see the next day.

Re: I have the opposite of a helicopter parent
I got a lump in my throat reading that. I know exactly what you're going through. I have a kid like that this year, too, but he's already perfected the "macho" thing... but when I see through it, it just breaks my heart.
Your student is so lucky to have a teacher who cares so much. I'm sure being in your class makes such a difference for him. They know when we care; I really believe that, and I really believe it helps.
